According to Merk Manual(2013), about one third of the world’s population is infected with TB. In 2006, there was an estimation of 9.2 million new cases worldwide. India and China were the countries that reported the highest number of new cases while South Africa came out with the largest case rate of 940 per 100,000. According to the World Health Organization, over 95% of TB cases are from developing countries while 95% of deaths from TB are from low to middle income countries.
Even though all age groups are at risk of TB there are other factors contributing to the TB infection. Those that are at the highest risk for TB are those that contracted the HIV virus.
