The Shawl

George Santayana once said “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Many people today do not have a clue on how much pain and torture that the victims of the holocaust endured. The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick tells a story of how a mother and her baby try to keep her baby alive during this time. In the story The Shawl shows how even with so much pain and punishment inflicted on her she still showed tremendous strength and love to try to keep her baby alive during the holocaust.
The Shawl is a short story created by Cynthia Ozick who shows a life of a women named Rosa who had a baby named Magda with her during the time of the holocaust. This story starts out with the Jewish people walking on the roads to the concentration camp. Ozick starts to describe Rosa and her baby during this march how Rosa did not feel hunger but light and how she was not like someone walking but someone walking in a faint trance, and how Rosa has her baby wrapped so tightly it was like a squirrel nest for Magda.

An example of how she did this was that she was using a magical shawl to hold her baby tight vand for her baby to suck any milk that was left in her breasts. By Rosa using this shawl it kept her baby alive during the hardest part of the march to the concentration camp. In today’s world many mothers would not go to this extent to care for her child which is very sad. Many mothers today will either neglect their child because they didn’t want them in the first place. If mothers today would go to this extent for love like Rosa did there wouldn’t be so many kids today that are not treated with love and
