What is the biggest challenge for college students today? Money. Not because of issues such as a student’s poor academic performance or unwillingness, but just money. It affects students before, during, and after college. Students applying to colleges are finding themselves being forced to turn away from their dream colleges because of financial burdens. Current college students are faced with the decision to either continue their education and risk going into debt or dropping out and continuing work, which most are choosing to do, and lastly, graduates who had to take out loans during college are still repaying their debts even years after their graduation. From the moment that they apply for college, students are already entrapping themselves in an endless, uphill financial battle that is only getting steeper with the increasing economy. The application fee for the college applications is only the beginning of the entrapment. Students should be worried about their education and future and not about when the next quarterly payment is due or if they can even continue college. Instead of thinking of ways to improve the society using skills they received from college, students are constantly working to pay off their current tuition or debts. The students who do not even get the chance to enter college because of these financial limitations are also being robbed of their right. According to Horace Mann, an education reformer during the first half of the nineteenth century, education is the natural, human right for all people. It allows for equal opportunity for people of all classes to compete at the same level if they are all given the same chance to a higher education. I believe that it is important for every willing person to be given the chance to learn. If they are not given the chance and are forced to cut their education short, they will never truly reach their full potential, and to have one’s future be taken away from them because of a materialistic thing like money is frustrating. College is one of the most fundamental institutions in our modern world. It is a place where most of our future politicians, doctors, scientists, and leaders are made.
