What Is Stress? Stress can be defined in numerous amounts of ways. It’s defined first as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. It also can be defined as a strain or tension in one’s life due to material objects or people. All these definitions has one similar thing about them, they all insinuate that stress will put a strain on your life, causing a chain effect of negative consequence’s on your mind and body. Identifying what may be causing you stress is often the first step in learning how to better deal with your stress. This is internal stress and it is one of the most important kinds of stress to understand and manage (Understanding and dealing with stress, Para 2). Internal stress is when people make themselves stressed. This often happens when we worry about things we can 't control or put ourselves in situations we know will cause us stress. Some people become addicted to the kind of hurried, tense, lifestyle that results from being under stress. They even look for stressful situations and feel stress about things that aren 't stressful. Some internal stressors include the inability to accept uncertainty, pessimism, negative self-talk, unrealistic expectations, perfectionism, and lack of assertiveness (Internal and external stress, Greene, Para 9). Internal stress comes from inside of us and determine our body 's ability to respond to, and deal with, the external stress-inducing factors or stressors including; nutritional status, attitudes, thoughts, feelings of anger, fear and worry, anticipation, imagination, memory, overall health and fitness levels, presence of illness and infection, emotional well-being, and the amount of sleep and rest you get (Health 24, para 2). Identifying these environmental stresses and learning to avoid them or deal with them will help lower your stress level. Environmental stress can come from anywhere, whether it’s from an overcrowded areas or something noisy that distracts you, it’s all the same type of stress that you are feeling. Even simple things such as the color of the walls may stress you out, it all depends on the certain type of person you are and how much stress you can undergo (Environmental stress, Evans, Para 1). Environmental stress can out a strain on how you go about living life. If you have an overwhelming amount of stress when it comes to crowds and loud noises, you may want to reconsider some of the places you go and things you do. For example, you would not want to go to an amusement park if you can’t handle the sound of screaming. If you did go, you would experience and overwhelming amount of environmental stress as you walk the park and hear all the screams from nearby riders. If you are always putting yourself in stressful situations, this can take a toll on your body and mind. Your mind will untimely become unhappy with the decisions you’re making and your body will become drained as you are using all your energy to feel stressed.
