Racism has been around since the 1600s. Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. Racism is when you see yourself different from everyone around you. We first started to notice the discrimination when our country was separating blacks and whites. Back then you couldn’t go to the same school together or even use the same bathroom.
Hate groups such as the KKK started in the 1860’s, and the act of violence began several years after the end of the civil rights movement. Although it was more severe then than it is today, it is still apparent. In the 17th century, racism was much more extreme than it is today. For example, African Americans were forced to live on plantations and work as slaves. They would perform difficult tasks outside in the heat, and in the cold. Picking cotton, farming, cooking, and cleaning are a few examples of what their labor consisted of. Nowadays, slavery is extinct and racism is rare. In the movie ‘A Time to Kill’, Carl Lee was proven innocent. At first, it seemed like the judge was on the white man’s side, because almost everyone was, however, his opinion evolved over time. Throughout history, especially during times where racism was apparent, it was easy to be proven innocent, even if you weren’t, especially against an African American. Nowadays, I believe that the court system is more tightly wound, but is still similar in a way. There will always be some corruption involved in it, just like anything
