Hawthorne provides tales of symbolism and romanticism that the element focuses more on the veil than handling the secondary characters in the story. The veil is used as catalysts by which other morals and perceptual are examined. The story by Hawthorne includes romanticism on how Mr. Hooper wears the veil for the rest of his life until death. The way the whole town reacted by the veil on Mr. Hooper's face was that they were very afraid and concerned to find out the reason why Mr. Hooper is wearing the veil. " I don't like, " muttered an old woman as she hobbled into the meeting house. "He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face" (Hawthorne 2). Hooper acknowledges the limitations of the human imagination encompassing his own dark world. Secondly, during the wedding event where the minister accidentally captured a glimpse of his veiled face in the looking glass and rushes out into the night horrified. He tries not to see his own reflection which he avoids all mirrors and reflection of the glass. The third element is those who stand opposition of the black veil, which in this case is Elizabeth, who tries to have Mr. Hooper remove the veil for her love, but Mr. Hooper refuses which he then says, "no one can behind the black veil." The black veil symbolizes the limitations of their judgments, but also the understandable human limitations. Within this symbolic having their character finds their own growth and self-acceptance. To sum up, pretty much the theme of the story is that everyone has sinned and everyone has that secret sin that they wouldn't share with anyone and they would try to hide it. Mr. Hooper is trying to say that we all have sinned, and those should worry for their own sins instead of being concerned for others sins. The black veil simply symbolizes that secret sin that people have and of course would try to hide it, but obviously, everyone can tell they are hiding
