A good name is important however, is it more important than the truth? The Crucible displays many circumstances where a character asks themselves this question. For instance, Abigail and Rebecca Nurse's perspective on this would differ. Elizabeth Proctor is known in Salem to be an honest, delightful woman who is known to have never told a lie. She thinks of herself to be pure and upright like the rest in the town. She is quoted in act II saying “I cannot think the Devil may own a woman’s soul, Mr.Hale, when she keeps upright way, as I have. I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do any good work in the world, and yet be secretly bound to Satan, Then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it.” (Miller,1303). It can be assumed that he is begging for them to leave him with his good name, by throwing his signed confession around town his name will be demolished with faul representation of the lies he once told. . Reverend Hale much like Proctor, was brought to Salem to help in the court cases and is often seen battling between believing what the court rules and what he truly believes. He believes it has gone too far and innocent people are being killed with the help of his signature. In Act III when Hale is noted yet again trying to defend the accused he says “Excellency, it is a natural lie to tell; I beg you, stop now before another is condemned!
