Why do people who do not strive for greatness feel the need to bring down those who do? In the novel “The Crucible,” author Victor Hugo says, “Society is a republic. When an individual tries to lift themselves above others, they are dragged down by the masses, either by ridicule or slander.” This is saying that most people do not want to see someone be better than them, and sometimes those who are being mocked end up falling in with the crowd the majority of the time. John Proctor is accused of being a witch, and the only way to save himself is to confess to something that was not true by signing his name to a lie. Reverend Parris for example, does things because he cares about what people will say about him. When his daughter dies in the beginning of the play he states, “what shall I say to them? That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?”, not wanting people to find out about this because he believed the congregation would think it happened because of witchcraft. This event then leads to Mary Warren going into the trial with John Proctor to say that she was lying about the spirits. As she tries to confess, Abigail went hysterical, so Mary Warren turns back and says “you’re the Devil’s man!”, claiming that John Proctor would wake her “every night, his eyes… like coals and his fingers claw [her] neck…” and made her sign the Devil’s book. Due to this John Proctor is accused of being a witch. After a long trial, John talks to his wife Elizabeth, and decides that he will confess so that he can live. When he is asked to sign his name to that lie, he decides to change his mind. He states “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worthy the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name.” He wanted to do the right thing saying that he was not a witch because he would be protecting the others involved, including his wife.
