In The Pearl, the pearl was everything to Kino. He thought he would become rich off of it, but instead, it brought evil. It was Kino’s fault that he lost his son to a pearl that he thought was valuable, but it was evil. Juana’s wisdom could of saved Coyotito. Kino was on the journey of escaping the trackers. By examining that Kino is greedy and would rather lose a family member over a pearl. Juana’s wisdom could of saved Coyotito because she wanted to throw the pearl away but Kino stopped her. Also, Kino was on the run from the tracker because they were after his pearl. Kino isn’t so smart because the pearl attracts trackers and they would want to take the pearl from Kino. In chapter 6, Kino let his son die because he does not want to let the pearl go. Coyotito’s scream is mistaken by the trackers as the cry of a coyote. One of the trackers fires his rifle, and the bullet kills Coyotito. Coyotito’s name ironically resembles that of the animal that they thought he was. Kino’s greed had developed before Coyotito died. The trackers are after Kino because of the pearl he possesses. The trackers had gotten mad when Kino had killed one of them. If the trackers caught the pearl, they would be paid a high price for getting the pearl. Greed is the main thing making the trackers pursue Kino. In chapter 6, the text states “ the family retreats farther into the shade for another rest, while Kino sleeps soundly. Juana is restless”, then it says “Kino wakes from a dream and demands that they keep quiet, creeping forward, he spots a trail of the trackers pursuing their trail. The feeling of greed and its destructive nature are very controlling in most of Kino’s decisions and of the numerous amounts of bad turns of event for Kino as the story goes on.
