The expression ‘to be human’ is uttered often in science fiction to convey a specific human experience. It doesn’t, however, mean that only those who are human are able to understand this feeling. This experience can translate to other species because it is a state of being that does not depend on what you were born as, but on who you become. Now, as for becoming, what does that entail? In the human culture, we generally appreciate kindness, empathy, and any sentiment that causes connection to others. This is what we eventually expect everyone to be or to become, even if they are aliens.
Humans do not characteristically have a collective culture; we are divided by several barriers such as language, borders, beliefs, and overall different living conditions. So, why is humanity and ‘being human’ a concept routinely related to Earth and its inhabitants? One

Nevertheless, if humanity has all this history of xenophobia, what makes them a shining example of ‘human’? The act of being human does not just account for connectivity; it is also being flawed and imperfect. While compassion is a trademark virtue that humans generally aim for, it is important to embrace that we are not perfect as well. Spock is not perfect in the way that he constantly berates people for their illogical behavior while, on occasion, hypocritically subjecting himself to that same behavior. In comparison, the two humans of the trio are brash, judgmental, rebellious at times, and so much more. An issue that Bones brings up with Spock is that he refuses to acknowledge his human side or is possibly in denial that it affects him. To acknowledge your humanity is to also acknowledge your imperfections. Spock used to be bullied as a child by Vulcans for the reason that he is half human and that made him grow to resent this part of him. He then embraces the Vulcan way and stifles his emotions. This is not healthy at all for a human, and so it must be the same for him

Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley plumbs the depth of this question with the example of a creature who is spurned by humanity despite being human in character. Have you ever wondered what it is exactly that makes us human? Is it the mistakes we make, or maybe our opposable thumbs? I believe there are many things that make us human, one of which includes our biological programming to die at some point in time. Death is something every human is aware of and every human embraces eventually. Philip K. Dick’s dystopian texts “The Electric Ant” and “A Little Something for Us Tempunauts” both use death as a means to illuminate that we are human; death reminds humans that we are not eternal. In these short stories, Dick speaks through the eyes of his protagonists who have been stripped of their humanity and describes the significance behind their individual choices to seek death.
We live in a world of differences. Our world differs view with the people we encounter, the things we learn and the ways we perceive things . We are world of individuals where no person is exactly alike or no group of people is exactly alike. Society is made up of different cultures and religions. Most of us belong to some type of group, these groups give us comfort, we are always more comfortable with those who are similar to us. But when does this become detrimental? "I'm only Human," is a response everyone hears when someone makes a mistake. Does that mean humans are in heritably fallible? Or are we fallible because of society? In Mexico it is polite to greet someone by kissing them on the cheek, in the United States it is considered an invasion of personal space. Personal traits make up society, nevertheless there are characteristics that is common throughout all of our species. People's identity is formed through their moral behavior and conscience, making them human.For centuries humans functioned by morals and conscience, but in today's society we have a social order. The government and those in power help formulate our opinions and are utilized to keep us in check. In order to define personhood, one must first define a human. A Human can be thought about in two different senses, a moral human sense and a genetic human sense. In a moral sense, humans can be thought of as a person who is a member of the moral community. In a genetic sense, humans are merely any physical being categorized as a being in the human species. From this one can conclude that a person is a human in the moral sense. Furthermore, characteristics of a person must be defined in order to differentiate moral beings from genetic humans.
Humans are extremely complex and unique beings. We are animals however we often forget our origins and our place in the natural world and consider ourselves superior to nature. Humans are animals but what does it mean to be human? What are the defining characteristics that separate us from other animals? How are we different? Human origins begin with primates, however through evolution we developed unique characteristics such as larger brain sizes, the capacity for language, emotional complexity and habitual bipedalism which separated us from other animals and allowed us to further advance ourselves and survive in the natural world. Additionally, humans have been able to develop a culture, self-awareness, symbolic behavior, and emotional complexity. Human biological adaptations separated humans from our ancestors and facilitated learned behavior and cultural adaptations which widened that gap and truly made humans unlike any other animal.

This allows one to blend into a society that is constantly improving itself. Without humanity, civilizations become corrupt. Humanity in Huckleberry Finn is the understanding that others are not sub-human creatures without feelings. However, true humanity is far broader than this one definition. Humanity is being able to ignore the natural instinct of complying with the views of society and instead show the compassion and mercy to see one another as a human being. It is stopping unjust behavior to help others become more equal. Humanity is a blend of kindness, care, and a restoration of dignity. Twain’s Huckleberry Finn implies that Huck must leave “sivilized” society in order to find his humanity.
One of the biggest questions asked by not only researchers, but everyday people as well, has been the question of what makes we as people human. Human nature is that quality that sets us apart from other living things; it is the definition of what we are.
What does it mean to be human? Sure, one must have the usual physical features such as fingers, eyes, arms, hands, feet, etc., but what does it really mean? Must the human be able to speak?
