We add godliness to perseverance by living in obedience to God's commands. Godliness springs from a deep love for him and reverence of his character and precepts.[“Websters Dictionary 1828 - Webster’s Dictionary 1828 - godly.” Websters Dictionary 1828. Accessed March 30, 2018. http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/godly.] Perseverance is not only living morally - it is beyond that. Ultimately, it is living obediently according to his will - it is conforming to the image of Christ!
Earlier we explored adding goodness to faith which is very important. Doing good works to show others that our faith is real, and avoiding things that would cause our thinking to be impure is paramount. But good works alone are insufficient to salvation

After all, we were all created in his image. The character of God still resides in the image that he has given to us. Although the image is marred by sin, the qualities of his character are within our reach. Therefore, adding godliness means to seek to become more like him - to polish up that image! In order to conform to Christ’s image, we must first understand God’s character and what God expects from us so that we can conform to his …show more content…
Walton. A Survey of the Old Testament. 3rd ed. Grand Rapids, Mich: Zondervan Publishing House, 2009, p 25.] In his covenants, he demonstrates holiness, grace, mercy, justice, loving kindness, and faithfulness. We should strive to imitate him by demonstrating these same qualities to him and others. We will explore some of God’s attributes to discover how we can add godliness and increase our participation in his divine nature.
First, God is holy and he commands us to be holy in all that we do. (1 Pet. 1:15) Furthermore, in Hebrews 12:14 it says that without holiness no one will see the Lord. Holiness means to be unique; to be set apart. In my opinion, holiness is keeping oneself apart from the influences of world culture. 1st Peter 1:17 tells us to “live out our time as foreigners here”. We must devote ourselves to be pure and unaffected by the world - we must be holy to be
But in the meantime – the closer we get to Christ the more we are mindful of our own corruption. We grow mindful of our defects and weaknesses as we approach "He who is impeccable. " We grow more mindful of the beauty and benevolence of God. The sign of an individual moving to holiness is that they are getting humbled and God is constantly amplified. Holiness and pureness has always been a part of God's system.
Engagement with others is the most fertile ground for spiritual growth. Yet, salvation cannot come through individual questing nor good works in the community of the world alone. Salvation can only come when the journey and the work become
In this chapter, Packer lists six ways God is unchanging. God’s life, character, truth, ways, purposes, and Son do not change, and His people are supposed to have these characteristics. After chapter seven, each chapter of Part II lists characteristics of God—majesty, wisdom, truth, love, grace, justice, wrath, goodness, severity, and jealousness. Packer titles chapter ten, “God’s Wisdom and Ours,” he gives the two ways to wisdom. The first, “We must learn to reverence God,” means that we must fear God and be humble to receive God’s knowledge, and the second, “We must learn to receive God’s word,” says that in order to receive God’s wisdom, one must “apply themselves to God’s revelation (101).
Seeing as how we are all God’s children, made in His image, it is important to understand the necessity to love and respect one another while glorifying Him in the process.
In The Pursuit of Holiness the author, Jerry Bridges, shows the Christian what it looks like to be truly holy. Holiness is to live a life of conformity to God’s will. Holiness is a joint effort between God and his people, it is not something God just gives us when we accept him into our lives. Many times Christians neglect the responsibility we have of moving towards God and pursuing holiness. Holiness is not something that is fully attainable, it is a constant pursuit to be like God. Holiness is expected by God. Not only is it expected, it is a part of our birthright as Christians. God specifically calls us to holiness, “I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44a). God is perfectly holy. Therefore, to be holy is to conform to the character of God, and not to this world. Since God is perfectly holy we can have confidence that when dealing with us he is just and perfect. Bridges explains that holiness is God’s greatest attribute. Since he is holy, that makes all his other attributes good, holy, and just. God, being all of these things, cannot hold us to a standard of any less than holiness.
God is like a father and we, humanity are his children. He teaches us, prepares us, disciplines us, and punishes us for not obeying and following His commands. The attributes of God that belong distinctly to him are that
Throughout the context of the Bible, the Lord stresses the importance of what we do with our time here on Earth. He wants all of his children to obey their masters through Him, regardless of how tiresome the task becomes. Several books within the Bible illustrate the importance of sacrifice and discipline in the journey to salvation and everlasting happiness. God enforces that believing in Him, having hope, and putting in fruitful work is the true path to a righteous life and acceptance into Heaven (1 Cor. 15:58). The strength to endure any obstacle comes from your relationship with God and the integrity you have for it; exhibiting the significant relationship between His word and your work.
As Christians we read, we talk, and learn about the attributes and the nature of God during our Christian life. I am talking about the uniqueness and his personality that we all take part of everyday of our lives or in relationship with him. Throughout history God has left hidden jewels in the Bible of who he truly is. On the other hand, the bibles list few attributes of who he is, but as always its incomplete and we have to seek him for his very attributes in nature.
Essentially the third definition of holiness according to Socrates was that the Gods love things because they are holy, and that things are not holy because the Gods love them. That means that things or actions are already holy and then Gods love them,
Many Christians believe that good works are not an important aspect in life because the most important thing is whether a person is saved or not However, there are many verses in Scripture that are very clear about the importance of good works in the life of a believer. It is important to stress that before good works are counted unto righteousness, the foundation of a relationship with Christ must be set. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not parish but have everlasting life.” Without Jesus there is no foundation but there is much more to life than getting saved. After a person is born of the Spirit, their life will be examined and their works will be judged.
... of justice and kindness and devotion; pray and fast without fainting, and spend all of our time in some form of religious worship; if the things that we do were such to get us a name throughout the world, and make us famous to all future generations, it would all be in vain without sincere love to God in the heart. Furthermore, we understand that it is not the external work done, or the suffering endured, that is worth anything but yet it is the extent of love that is displayed that means something in the sight of God.
What is the holiness of God? People might assume that the meaning of “the holiness of God” is God being separated from sin, but that is the result of His holiness. I believe the correct definition of “the holiness of God” is the totality of His being. In other words, it is not that God is holy, because He is separated from sin; rather, it is correct to say that since
...overall change certain aspects within politics and law. God’s image is magnificent and grandiose, being one of the most beautiful creations to this day. One can not grow into holiness, but he can only grow in it. Holiness consists of taking out the old and adding the new. “It will take a second work of grace, preceded by a whole-hearted consecration and as definite an act of faith as that which preceded [ones] conversion.”1
”(Brundidge-Fuller 49). By following these commandments, the appreciation of the covenant with God is shown. Since everyone is made in God’s image and likeness, that means his actions should be emulated through everyone. In all decisions, God will make sure that everything he does is done the right way, if others are hurt or mistreated in the process then a good outcome means nothing.... ...
