Did you know that there are interruptions that can interrupt your identity? People have identities about themselves, and they use the identity process to adjust their behavior to keep their perceptions similar to their identity standard. If their perceptions differ greatly form their identity standard, then there is probably an interruption that has occurred to cause this difference. In “Identities and Their Operation” by Peter J. Burke and Jan E. Stets, they state that there are four types of interruptions. The four types that they write about are: the broken loop, interference from other identities, over-controlled identity, and multiple identities. One of these interruptions is illustrated in the essay “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. In her essay she writes about how her English that she uses in her speech at her book talk is different from the English she uses when talking to her Chinese mother. Tan was not aware of the different kinds of English she used, until the book talk. She states, “My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech, using the kind of English I have never used with her” (391). At this moment Tan is realizing the multiple identities she has, and how her standards differ from the people at her book talk to her mother. “Some identities are taken on briefly and infrequently” (79) such as Tan’s identity with her book talk because she has talked to her mom more often than the people at the book talk. This is one of the illustrations of the fourth interruption in Tan’s essay. Therefore, her identity to her book talk is not as controlled since it is not used as frequently. In contrast, to her identity towards her mom is more developed because she has been speaking her mom’s English for a long
