Nowadays, people believe that they should have strong personality to manage their life. Therefore, it is necessary to have high self-esteem in order to help people getting better lives. Dr. Phillips stated that the definition of self-esteem in psychology is how people assess another person through looking to the values (n.d.). In fact, people may not notice that. Building high self- confidence can consider as the first step towards happiness and better life. There are two factors that affect the self-esteem of young adulthood and older adults in different ways, such as healthy life, and work life, while on the other hand, there is one similar factor, which is family life.
The first different factor between young adulthood and older adults is healthy life .In young adulthood, people want to have a good health life because in this stage of age most people care in their bodies. Moreover, the rate of self-confidence in young adult decreases and reaches to the lowest point in older adults, but in adulthood the rate of self-esteem raises. Also, researchers did a lot of surveyed that asked people about self-esteem. The result showed that self- confidence varies from white and black people, such as black people change during childhood to adulthood. Therefore, self-esteem in all age is depend on the people’s life status, which their lives happy or sad, and it becomes high in middle age and decline after retirement The author also stated that there are other factors impact on self-confidence such as education and employment status.
Self-esteem is commonly defined as “a confidence in one's own worth or abilities.” It’s typically known as a personality trait, so everyone’s idea of “self-esteem” is completely different. Your self-esteem affects how you talk, act, and even think. Do you feel like you’re successful? Are you happy with your appearance? How do you feel about your social status? These are all questions that can help determine whether you have low self-esteem or high self-esteem.
The question of whether self- esteem has significance with real world- consequences is a valid concern. Ulrich Orth and Richard W. Robins provide the answer, with evidence contributed by researched studies, in their article The Development of Self- Esteem that self- esteem, in fact, does influence societal significance. With the determination on self- esteem trajectory from adolescence to old age, self- esteem stability, and the relationship between levels of self-esteem and predictions of success and failure, one can conclude that self- esteem influences life outcomes; moreover, people can participate to involvements focused at positively influencing the development of self- esteem.
Adulthood is the time in life when a person has reached maturity and is aware of the responsibilities that they have to take on. People’s lives are centered on their careers and relationships, leaving less time for much of anything else. Adulthood has three different stages; there is young adulthood (18-40), middle adulthood (41-65), and late adulthood (65-to death), according to Levinson’s Seasons of Life (Levinson, 2010). Individuals experience so many changes to their physical body, cognitive abilities and social development throughout different stages of life. Looking at all the differences that are experienced during these stages of development in early, middle and late adulthood. Becoming older is a natural progression of life. Late adulthood is the period of life in every individual that follows the period of his or her life after he/she turns 60 years of age. Being active, eating healthy foods and handling stress have been shown to greatly improve the quality of life for senior citizens.
The article “What is Successful Aging”, thoroughly explained the author’s thoughts on what aging successfully actually means. I think it is extremely vital to try our best to be content with our lives and what we have done at a later age. Integrity versus despair, as we learned in class kept coming to mind while reading the article. It is important that when one reaches this age he or she doesn’t feel like there is more to look back on than to look forward to. I agreed with the author’s views on self-efficacy and different opportunities in aging successfully.
Self-esteem is very important, that is why people developed it into a field of study and have carried out series of research on it. It allows people to face life with more confidence, benevolence and optimism making it easy for them to reach their goals. With self-esteem people can easily convince themselves that they deserve happiness. It allows you to face life with confidence, kindness and cheerfulness which in turn makes accomplishing your goals and vision in life very easy.
After reviewing both studies it can be concluded that an individual’s self-esteem changes based on their relationship status, ethnicity, personality characteristics and a possible effect on gender. Individuals that have high self-esteem are usually individuals that are outgoing, energetic and easy going. Those individuals have a lot of friends and are sociable. Adolescence self –esteem can be based on how popular they are in school those adolescences that are popular will have a higher self-esteem opposed to the adolescence that are more reserved, and that do not have many friends. Individual’s self- esteem can change during their twenties and sometimes into their thirties and beyond.
Late adulthood should be a time in a person's life where they feel fulfilled. They can look back on their memories and be happy with the way they have lived their life. Now, too many elderly people are not satisfied and look at this stage as depressing. Most fear death of either a loved one or for themselves. This topic is interesting to me because elderly people should make the best of their last stage of life. This topic discusses about getting older, the life changes that they go through physically, emotionally, and mentally. We should know more about it so that we can help our family and friends get through one of the best, yet toughest part of our mortal life.

There are many varying stages of development and health in late adulthood, along with steady changing of life expectancy. Aging is a part of life, and with it comes changes in every area of living. Many diseases find late adulthood as an opportune time to affect people. Eventually, whether caused by disease or another reason, every individual dies. Death is unique to every person, and healthcare in America is changing to reflect that. This stage of life is a time when bodily processes and functions may be decreasing, but depending on lifestyle choices, death can come at different times.
