The westward expansion of the United States is a major theme of 19th-century American history. America throughout the 1800s took on a spirit of conquest and expansion. Western Expansion really took off after the 1844 election. Candidates Henry Clay and James K. Polk ran discussing issues such as economic development, slavery and expansion. Polk won the election and entered office as texas was annexed from the United States. President Polk once said “ I declared my purpose to be to acquire for the United States, california, new mexico, and perhaps some of the northern provinces of mexico”. Many settlers experienced problems as others claimed the same land as them. In the late 18th and early 19th century American began to move out of the Northeast into the west. This resulted in the expulsion, once again of the Cherokee to the South. Americans began to move even further into Mexican borders and the deep south. Between the years of 1800 and 1860 America continuously pushed down and into Spanish territory. Americans began to call this filibustering. Filibustering violated the U.S. Neutrality Act of 1818, but because Americans wholeheartedly believe in American expansion and manifest destiny filibusters began to be seen as “heros”(406 Schaller). In 1846 the US declared war on Mexico would last until 1848. In June the Bear Flag revolt initiated the collapse of Mexican authority in California and in 1847 Mexico city was captured. By 1848 the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War adding more than 1 million square miles to the United States. This added more land than the Louisiana purchase. After the treaty that ended the war in Mexico was put into place gold was discovered in California. People poured into the area creating the California Gold Rush.
