A weapon is an extension of your body, it can be strong, fast, silent, deadly, powerful and much more. In medieval times weapons and armor such as swords and shields were all key parts in winning battles. The middle ages started after the Roman Empire fell in 476 by barbarians, and the Middle Ages took place in Europe. It started in the 5th century and ended in 15th century. The Middle Ages were dark and dangerous times full of war and many battles took place and there were many different weapons and combat styles used in theses battles.
A type of weapon that was used a lot during sieges in the Middle Ages were catapults. “Catapults were a weapon used during the Middle Ages (Medieval period) in siege warfare. Catapults were devices for hurling stones or other objects” ("Catapults"). “There were many different types of catapults such as The Ballista - The Ballista was similar to a Giant Crossbow and by using tension. The Trebuchet - The massive Trebuchet consisted of a lever and a sling and was capable of hurling stones weighing 200 pounds with a range of up to about 300 yards. The Mangonel - Missiles were launched from a bowl-shaped bucket at the end of the one giant arm of the Mangonel”. ("Catapults") Catapults were used for invading Castile’s and sieges.
Armor was the main use of protection in the middle ages. One of the most important parts about combat if you didn't have armor then you was vulnerable in combat. The European middle ages lasted from the 5th century to the 15th century, which started the fall of the Western Roman Empire and moved to the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The classical antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern period were the divisions to the early, high, and late middle ages. The gothic awakening was in England during the 1750s, caused by the medieval forms. Medieval Europe was awakening from a feudal war and ignorance. The new way of learning was spread in the western society. In the gothic awakening age, towns and kingdoms flourished and built churches across Europe.
During the middle ages there were different types of warriors around the world. Two of those prestigious warrior groups were the knights and samurai. Knights were European warriors while samurai were the warriors of Japan. Although they both had similarities and differences, as well as advantages and disadvantages, one group had the upper hand. That group would be the knights and it shows in their weapons, training, and armor. All of those are expressed within the DBQ evidence packet.

Flinging a wide variety of objects hundreds of yards, the trebuchet became the weapon of choice for laying siege to a castle. Its incredible range could often place it beyond the effectual defense range of the castle archers, thereby permitting the besiegers to destroy the defender's walls with little interference. During extended sieges, trebuchets were often used to hurl large quantities of dung, dead animals, and other such items to encourage disease throughout the besieged city.

Hurling an object towards one’s enemy may seem as old as time itself. People have hurled fists at each other, thrown spears, and launched giant rocks into enemy territory. The use of catapults, and other objects that hurl projectiles, also seem as old as human civilization itself. The effectiveness of the catapult in flinging objects over a great distance and causing destruction is due to a few basic physics principals that govern force, energy, motion, speed and mass to name a few. The design of the catapult denotes a change in modern warfare to the engineer behind weapons being just as important as the actual soldiers and people who use them.
The Met museum said that the most popular used weapons were “spear, sword, axe, and the bow and arrow.” These weapons and tactics of fighting then became the backbone of weapons today, such as guns. Spears, bows and arrows allow knights to fight from a distance, such as hand grenades and guns used in today’s military.

Another large weapon of siege was used primarily in storms, the battering ram. In its early stages, the ram was no more than a hefty beam with a mass of metal attached to the end. Men would hoist the cumbersome boom onto their shoulders and run into a wall or door as many times as needed until the surface under attack gave way. In the Middle Ages, it was developed into more of a machine, for the ram hung from the center of a tent under which the men operating the ram could hide. The ram could be swung like a pendulum much more easily than having to constantly run back and forth. Also, castle guards often poured hot oil or other things onto the ram and its engineers. The tent, which was on wheels, protected the men and the battering ram as well.

During the Elizabethan period Europeans mainly focused on warfare. War required long range weapons to slow down the approaching enemy and short range weapons were needed for combat. This era started the usage of combustion and developed cannons and pistols. The advancements of weaponry also lead to the advancements in armor from chainmail to plate armor. Various weapons and armor’s were needed for warfare during the Elizabethan period.
Imagine having to bury your own children. How awful would that be? The Middle Ages were a brutal time that included the bubonic plague, many wars and other horrible things. This period is considered to be one of religion and the Catholic Church, but this was overshadowed by chaos and confusion. Although the Middle Ages is often known as the age of faith, a more appropriate title for the time period would be The Dark Ages because of the black death, wars and the collapse of government.
Another type of catapult is the Onager. Onagers were used right up to the middle ages with the Trebuchet, when gunpowder and the Cannon were invented and eventually replaced the catapults.
The Middle Ages, also known as Medieval Era, was a period in history dating back to 476 CE through the early fifteenth century. During this period the church was viewed as a dominating force that led intellectual and cultural life. As emphasis on the church and religion grew, many aspects of everyday life were influenced and shaped towards a more spiritual ideal. Therefore, music began to reflect the practices and teachings of the church in attempt to inspire worshippers and encourage praise; singing the church texts did this. Although music provided other entertainment and secular values, its main purpose was a sacred and religious one. Mass was seen as the most important church service of the day with intentions of teaching the difference between good and evil. In order to maintain this sense of morality, music incorporated the church teachings into its text as a way to keep religious practices lively and increase worship participation during church.
