One of the most important and influential poets of the 19th century who helped shape the future of American poetry was Walt Whitman, author of the famous book of poetry, "Leaves of Grass.” Two of the poems associated with this book that I will be writing about being O Captain! My Captain!, and When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd. In the poetry world Whitman crossed new boundaries, revealing every inch of his mind in his works. He improved the way Americans wrote poetry by covering arguable topics, even though others were harshly criticizing his poems he continued to write, and encouraging American people to express themselves and not to be ashamed of who they are and what they have to offer the world. I believe that When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd was the better out of the two ,because it presents detailed images to the reader, along with the speaker’s feelings toward those images.O Captain! My Captain! leaves out too much detail to be as effective. Whitman was born into a large family on Long Island on May 31, 1819. From the very beginning, Whitman loved writing. Mostly self- taught, Whitman was inspired from this very early age by Shakespeare, Dante, and Homer. At twelve, Whitman, inspired by his love of literature, began training as a printer. Living and working in the printing district in New York, Whitman was content until a huge fire destroyed the district and the industry when he was seventeen.
