Company Overview and Mission Statement
Wal-Mart's mission statement and advertising slogan are the same, "We save people money so they can live better." In addition to this mission statement, the company’s purpose is,
“If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone…we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life.”(Wal-Mart.com)
Wal-Mart’s purpose is to help people around the world save money and live better - anytime and anywhere - in retail stores, online and through their mobile devices.
In order to fulfill its mission, according to Charles Fishman in his book titled The Wal-Mart Effect How the World’s Most Powerful Company Really Works and How It’s Transforming the American Economy,
Wal-Mart has developed some unique, policies, principles, rules, processes and procedures which all form the Wal-Mart stores corporate culture and success:
• Open Door Policy - Managers' doors are open to employees of all levels
• Sundown Rule - Answering employee, customer, and supplier questions on the same day the questions are received
• Grass Roots Process - Capturing suggestions and ideas from the sales floor and front lines
• 3 Basic Beliefs & Values - Respect for the Individual, Service to our Customers, Striving for Excellence
• 10-Foot Rule - Making eye contact, greeting, and offering help to customers who come within 10 feet
• Servant Leadership - Leaders are in service to their team
• Wal-Mart Cheer - A structured chant that was created by Wal-Mart’s founder Sam Walton to lift morale every morning (Fishman, 2006)

According to Wal-Mart’s webpage, Wal-Mart’s sustainability trends have been changing and improving since 2003. “Wal-Mart takes environmental compliance seriously and is committed to having a strong and effective compliance program through the company.” (Walmart.com)The company is setting up strict plans to keep achieving their deep rooted motto “Always Low Prices” and “Save Money, Live Better” by reducing their environmental impact holding themselves to the highest of standards and complying with regulations. Their aspirations and trends towards a more sustainable Wal-Mart corporation are:
• To be supplied 100% by renewable energy
• To create zero waste
• To sell products that sustain people and the environment
