Company Overview and Mission Statement
Wal-Mart's mission statement and advertising slogan are the same, "We save people money so they can live better." In addition to this mission statement, the company’s purpose is,
“If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone…we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life.”(Wal-Mart.com)
Wal-Mart’s purpose is to help people around the world save money and live better - anytime and anywhere - in retail stores, online and through their mobile devices.
In order to fulfill its mission, according to Charles Fishman in his book titled The Wal-Mart Effect How the World’s Most Powerful Company Really Works and How It’s Transforming the American Economy,
Wal-Mart has developed some unique, policies, principles, rules, processes and procedures which all form the Wal-Mart stores corporate culture and success:
• Open Door Policy - Managers' doors are open to employees of all levels
• Sundown Rule - Answering employee, customer, and supplier questions on the same day the questions are received
• Grass Roots Process - Capturing suggestions and ideas from the sales floor and front lines
• 3 Basic Beliefs & Values - Respect for the Individual, Service to our Customers, Striving for Excellence
• 10-Foot Rule - Making eye contact, greeting, and offering help to customers who come within 10 feet
• Servant Leadership - Leaders are in service to their team

According to Wal-Mart’s webpage, Wal-Mart’s sustainability trends have been changing and improving since 2003. “Wal-Mart takes environmental compliance seriously and is committed to having a strong and effective compliance program through the company.” (Walmart.com)The company is setting up strict plans to keep achieving their deep rooted motto “Always Low Prices” and “Save Money, Live Better” by reducing their environmental impact holding themselves to the highest of standards and complying with regulations. Their aspirations and trends towards a more sustainable Wal-Mart corporation are:
• To be supplied 100% by renewable energy
• To create zero waste
• To sell products that sustain people and the environment
But Wal-Mart’s care for us goes beyond that simple relationship. As many of us have seen if we have been to a Wal-Mart, they hire people who normally would not be able to get a job. The company knows that by broadcasting itself as positive and helpful in nature it can increase its revenue and in turn increase the amount of assistance it provides to us the consumer. “In 2004 Wal-Mart donated over $170 million. More than 90 percent of these donations went to charities in the communities served by Wal-Mart stores.’ Even more heartfelt than this, Wal-Mart was the leader in goods based relief efforts for victims of hurricane Katrina. “Walmart’s response to the hurricane was lauded even by its critics: it donated more than $20 million worth of merchandise, including food for 100,000 meals, and it promised jobs for all of its displaced workers.” And the first supply truck to arrive at the superdome was a Wal-Mart truck.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates retail stores in various formats around the world. Wal-Mart is committed to growing by improving the standard of living for our customers throughout the world. Wal-Mart earns the trust of its customers every day by providing a broad assortment of quality merchandise and services at every day low prices while fostering a culture that rewards and embraces mutual respect, integrity, and diversity. In 2006 the net sales were $312.4 billion versus in 2005 were $285 billion.
A prior market firm used by Wal-mart (GSD&M) warned Wal-mart of the public image issues they were facing and had not addressed, even though they had been advised of them for over two years. GSD&M wrote in one review to the company that “sadly, after two years of empty rhetoric and ineffective publicity stunts, we now know that Wal-Mart has not only needlessly hurt its Associates and their families, but has pointlessly hurt the image and success that Sam Walton built.” (wakeupWalMart.com, 2007). Wal-mart has acted in a manner that blends with the theory of egoism. This theory “sets as its goal the benefit, pleasure, or greatest good of the oneself alone.” (wofford.edu, 1997). “Egoist use personal advantage…as the standard for measuring an action’s rightness.” (Shaw, 2008, p. 45). Clearly Wal-mart today is acting with interests geared toward their personal advantage and not considering the wreckage it is leaving all around them.
Wal-Mart is, to some extent, a values-based corporation. The Wal-Mart Corporation takes a strong, direct stance on many issues. This can be seen in many items in which they refuse to sell, such as; music and games with explicit content, adult magazines, and the morning after pill. This shows character in the company because they are foregoing potential profits in order to enforce values that they believe in. Wal-Mart is probably making some people very happy by this moral stance that they have undertaken, and it gives a message to the public that Wal-Mart is not a heartless corporation like many others.
Wal-Mart is a chain like stores. It operates in a very vast market. This company has comewith both advantages and disadvantages. It has changed the relationship between big-box retailers and manufacturers. This company has been viewed to be the core cause of bankruptcy of several American businesses together with a high rate of unemployment in the United States. Some people seem to be voting for Wal-Mart while others are not on its side. The supporters are for the company since it has enabled them to shop at a low-cost and at one-stop shopping. Others are against the company since its causing a lot of harm to the small businesses and to the economy of the United States as whole. There
Wal-Mart was conceived and founded by Sam Walton in 1962, at Rogers, Arkansas. Sam Walton started with just a few small variety stores, funded with borrowed money. His goal was to provide affordable products to the public to make life easier. After his success with the first few stores, Sam Walton borrowed more money to build more stores, creating the Wal-Mart empire as we see it today. The retail giant proves its stoic presence in our lives with its $401 billion sales for fiscal year 2009.
There have been many criticisms and outrages about Wal-Mart and its growing presence, as many people who oppose the company believe it brings nothing but negative outcomes to communities and economies around the United States. This claim is not true as Wal-Mart may have some downfalls and unintended negative effects but overall proves to have a positive affect on the economy of the United States as a whole. Wal-Mart pays its employees comparable rates, gives them comparable benefits, has little to no effect on surrounding small businesses (often times even having positive effects), does not play a negative role in the unemployment problem in the U.S., and provides communities with employment, access to cheap goods, and provides low income consumers with the opportunity to increase their quality of life.
Sam Walton was born in 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. In 1942, at the age of 24, he joined the military. He married Helen Robson in 1943. When his military service ended in 1945, Sam and Helen moved to Iowa and then to Newport, Arkansas. During this time, Sam gained early retail experience, eventually operating his own variety store. He opened the first Walmart in 1962 at the age of 44 in Rogers, Arkansas. His competitors thought his idea that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service would never work. As it turned out, the company 's success exceeded even Sam 's expectations. By 1990, Walmart was the nation 's number-one retailer. By keeping their prices low, Walmart can easily pass that savings on to their customers and in return, their buyers are able to have a higher income and can spend their money on more products, preferably Walmart’s.
Currently, Wal-Mart does not have a formal mission statement, but its main mission can be tied to its (3) basic beliefs which are Respect for the Individual, Service to Customer, and Strive for Excellence (www.walmartfacts.com). Thus, based on its core values and beliefs, Wal-Mart’s mission is focused on providing exceptional services and "everyday low prices" to its customers.
Walmart is a company that can be seen from many different perspectives. Due to its vast size; it can be easy to identify its faults and environmental issues surrounding the company. However, they are well aware of these problems and criticisms and have made many efforts towards issues around the world. The motivation and desire Walmart have to improve the world we live in today can be seen through their treatment of employees, suppliers as well as their efforts towards the environment and other humanitarian issues. Given this, there is still endless resources on the web proving the company to be one of a negative burden on society.
While keeping in mind they are a business which rely on profits. Walmart is a popular company that is known for their low prices. This corporation is also known for giving back to communities by making charitable contributions of 100,000 grants annually, as well providing disaster relief to various countries burdened by disasters and donated $100 million dollars to neighborhoods and law enforcement agencies. They also provide employees with college grants to obtain a two or four year college degree, Walmart is investing in their employees by giving them an advantage in their future. Walmart has also found ways to reduce waste by creating materials that are nontoxic and are recyclable friendly. With the use of sustainability, strategic philanthropy, causing marketing, shared values and stakeholder that is why this company was ranked number one by Forbes list in
Wal-mart has a reputation for caring for its customers, of course their employees, and for the prospective public. So Wal-Mart can be an industrial leader for the world of shoppers with an eye for lower affordable prices, company decision makers would continue it's systematic strategies that it's founder and president established years ago. Sam Walton believed in three guiding principles in his strategy planning they were to provide the customer with good value and service, to have a good relationship with its associates, and to be involved with the community.
