With over 9 years as a fire officer for the city of Waco Fire Department, analyzing situations is an essential skill to keep your crew, the public, and yourself safe. Prioritizing daily activities or making the decision to work or not work a patient in cardiac arrest on a medical emergency, a quick analysis of the situation drives a fire officers’ decisions. I have always based my decisions on how I would act if it were my family. Four years ago, an arsonist plagued the city burning vacant houses. Correctly sizing up the structure involved and analyzing to determine our mode of operation. Vacant houses pose many dangers, due to their lack of maintenance. Incidents that such as motor vehicle collisions that required extrication tools to gain access to the patient was coded as a motor vehicle accident with injuries and not a motor vehicle accident with extrication. When I questioned the officer, who filled out the report he stated: “all we did was pop the door open.” I answered him by explaining the actions were consistent with an extrication and by not coding correctly, the department loses an extrication on our incident reporting. To fix the problem all officers and acting officers will be required to complete the online National Fire Academy Course National Fire Incident Reporting Systems 5.0 self-study online. This course will give all officers and acting officers a solid foundation to start from when entering reports properly. Battalion chiefs will be required to review incident reports for thoroughness and completeness. Several criteria were used outside of fit, finish, comfort, and ease of use. Being a larger department, we have working SCBA shop that is utilized by other departments within the city and outside agencies such as the county sheriff’s department. Having the ability to repair and maintain our own functioning SCBA shop is valuable to the efficiency of our department in terms of reduced downtime per SCBA and financial cost of having an outside vendor replicate these functions. Outside agencies also utilize our SCBA shop, so our decision will have a large impact if or when we change
