The ethics and morals of using virtual reality with medicine have many faces. Ethics is defined as the way we should act towards others; also the justification of right and wrong, in this case a set rules or expectations that are set forth in the medical profession. Let’s look some ethical issues regarding virtual reality and medical treatments. The essence of virtual reality is that it can stimulate reality and it could new possibility.” The person that utilizes it such as a patient has illusion of “being” in the computer-generated environment while interacting with the virtual reality objects that are available to them.” (Botella, Garcia-Palacios,& Banos, 2009) One way that virtual reality can be use is for psychological purposes which can raise several ethical issues. When using this type treatment, the observer or doctor would have to really observe some effects of identifying the distinction between real and virtual worlds. According to Cherry (2014), virtual reality over the years has been used to deliver cognitive behavior therapy which is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence certain types of behaviors. This type treatment is called cyber-therapy. CBT, for short, helps treat phobias, addiction, depression, and anxiety. As technology emerges, unanswered questions still remain. Many ethical issues would be the safety and effective research or treatments use during the early stages of virtual reality developments with thoughts of issues of society that may be affected by this evolution of this technology. In this case, is it right that our minds in some way manipulated to overcome some things we feared the most? Ethics refers to the values and customs of a community at a particular point in time. At present, the term ethics is guided by the moral principles that guide our everyday actions. These moral principles guide the researcher into deciding what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. The foundation of medical ethics is governed by two philosophical frameworks: deontology, and utilitarianism. However, ultimately, the ethics committees need to balance the risks, and benefits for the participants and the community associated with the particular research proposal.
The term Virtual Reality (VR) is used by many different people with many meanings. There are some people to whom VR is a specific collection of technologies, that is a Head Mounted Display, Glove Input Device and Audio. Some other people stretch the term to include conventional books, movies or pure fantasy and imagination. However, for purposes of this research, we restrict VR to computer mediated systems. We would define Virtual Reality as a way for humans to visualize, manipulate and interact with computers and extremely complex data.
I should say, in closing, sometimes the virtual world is simply a more appealing residence than the actual world. It can be a pleasant retreat, with all resolutions within grasp, experienced by you, the hero. The question is, at what point should one curb his escapism?
In today’s society, there are many people who are looking for other people who have same identities or thoughts. In the VR, it is easier to find them and they don’t have to step any process to become a couple or have sex. However, there are obviously negative parts that affect on people too. “There are games that go viral overnight, causing people to coop themselves up in their homes for days to play” (Isaac 1). Meaning that more people every day are connected to this technology and losing themselves. But is this a safe thing to be invested in this technology? In a Japanese cartoon, that has been out for years now called “Sword art online”, a mass group of people plays this VR game where they wear a helmet similar to the VR goggles only, every part of them was in the game and they were motionless in real life. In this game, they were transported to medieval times where they chose their alter egos and fought amongst each other. The game, however, took a dangerous turn when someone found out how to control the technology and become a “God”. Consequently, when people would die in the game they were affected the same way in real life. They couldn’t leave the game unless they died, and it went on for years until the boss was beaten, a massive amount of people died because of this and it raises the question. How is it known that people won’t do this in real life? The technology is so faulty and because of the mass group of audience that it attracts can cause someone to do exactly what happened in this cartoon. Society is in need of a refreshing of ethics that stays on par with the development of man's other creations.
