The 2010 film Macbeth successfully conveys Shakespeare’s intended themes of violence, supernatural forces, and good versus evil.
Certainly, this Macbeth film effectively displays horrible violence by opening with images and clips from war. Beginning the film in this way immediately introduces the theme of violence and brings violence to the front of the audience’s mind. The movie also opens on a bloodied and clearly suffering soldier. This immediate emphasis on violence sets the tone for the entire movie. It becomes instantaneously evident that violence plays a key role in this movie rendition of Macbeth, which is true in the original play as well. The entire story places a strong emphasis on violence, from the war which opens the play, to

The characters experienced violence everyday already, so it was easier for them to commit acts of violence. Also, this violence continues throughout Macbeth’s reign as king, and the audience sees clips of soldiers marching through streets and killing people. In these instances, violence serves as a method of intimidation and power. Macbeth sends soldiers out to kill anyone who opposes him to scare others into following him, which gives him more power. Violence is certainly a powerful weapon, which Macbeth uses to control his people. The director of Macbeth (2010) shows several videos of people killed by Macbeth’s soldiers to instill the same fear in the audience that the people living under Macbeth’s reign definitely felt, and to show how effective violence was as a way for Macbeth to force people to do what he wanted. Undoubtedly, Macbeth’s entire reign as the King of Scotland stems from horrible violence. This is evident in the film through the large banner of Macbeth, which hangs in the dining hall. The background color of the banner is red, a color associated with blood and violence. While there is no mention of this banner in the …show more content…
Shakespeare intended for the audience to know that the three Witches were omnipresent and controlling every action that occurred after Macbeth murdering Duncan. The director of Macbeth (2010) closely adheres to this intent by placing the Witches in common settings, such as a hospital and a kitchen, and having them present at times of conflict. The witches are present for the most crucial parts of the story in the film, despite the fact that they are not explicitly in the scenes in the original play. These scenes include: the dinner scene where the ghost of Banquo haunts Macbeth, the preparation of the meal that the Macbeth and Lady Macbeth hosted for King Duncan, the scene after Lady Macbeth’s suicide where the Witches carry her away on a gurney, and the fight between Macduff and Macbeth. The Witches are present for these scenes to show that they are the ones controlling the actions, and they are the reasons that everything happens the way it does. If the Witches were not present during these times, the story would end differently. This shows how powerful supernatural forces are in the fate of the characters, For example, in the fight between Macbeth and Macduff, it appeared as though Macbeth was going to win. However, the Witches walked in and distracted him just as he was about to finish Macduff, which is how Macduff gained the upper hand in the fight.
Handling the adversity that develops within a character’s life is something that requires ultimate determination, dedication and thought. However, when the given adverse situation is handled in a violent manner, the following occurrences include downfall and destruction. Throughout William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, he is able to convey the realistic negative consequences that may follow the effects of violence on adversity. From the very genesis of the play, Macbeth is constantly handling adversity, which at times results in various dilemmas as a result of his tragic flaw. The violent acting on adversity or challenges placed before main character Macbeth, causes him to build a “snowball effect” of downfall and dismay throughout the play. Initially, Macbeth begins handling his challenges in different manners and is constantly altering his procedure. From handling situations cautiously to thoughtlessly, or having his own opinions to none of his own at all, and finally from fighting the truth to accepting his fate, regardless of the type of task, his violent handlings of them causes his own domino effect of transformations. By applying a variety of literary techniques such as personification and foreshadowing, William Shakespeare is able to effectively prove that acting violently upon adversity has a strong potential of resulting in pure disaster.
In Macbeth desire and violence are prevalent throughout the book. Desire blinds one’s ability to think clearly when making a decision. If violence is used due to one’s desire than violence becomes a never ending cycle until the outcome of the violence goes against the one whose desire led to violence. When making a decision, one should use reason, which is having a logical justification or motive. Violence is committed many times in the book but not all for the same motive. Macbeth commits several acts of violence in the book due to his desire for the kingship of Scotland.

The three witches in Macbeth are not the most powerful characters in the play, nor are they the catalyst to all of Macbeth’s crimes. At a first glance, it seems that the witches were the advocators to Macbeth’s actions. However, after another look at the situation, it isn’t hard to see that the witches only pulled out Macbeth’s dark side that was hiding just below the surface, and let him destroy himself. They only
The twenty-first century judicial system goes back in time to solve murders in the past. Many high school students before they proceed to college will read the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, this play like many have very relatable universal themes such as greed, relationships, and good versus evil. If the play Macbeth was applied in today’s judicial system for killing Duncan the prosecutor would have to look at all the angels of the crime right down to the motivates and the purpose of what drove him to commit the murder.
William Shakespeare, one of the greatest English play writers, has had a profound influence upon different societies globally since the fifteenth century, for his plays inspire many contemporary artists to present new scopes reflecting their societies. Considered as one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, Macbeth has a completely disparate interpretation of the movie Scotland, PA, which translates the original play into a black comedy. A Scottish royal and general, Macbeth the protagonist undergoes a demonic transformation in personality, in which he unethically takes the crown by murdering numerous characters. The director of the movie alters the plot while maintaining the basic semblance of power, ambition, and masculinity from Shakespeare’s work. In the movie, the alteration of the process Macbeth usurps the power of Duncan, including his internal and external incentives, gives the audience a fresh perspective on one of the English classical plays.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth has always been considered one of the literary worlds most celebrated tragedies. It is arguably the darkest and most gruesome of his plays. The protagonist, Macbeth, is the poster child for tragic hero, “a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy” (www.dictionary.com). And until recently we were satisfied with that… At the Cannes Film Festival in 2001, a low budget comedy was unveiled. It was called Scotland, PA. This film was written by a first-time director, Billy Morrissette, and depicts the familiar story in a surprisingly different form.
Prior to deciding whether or not conflict is central to the dramatic development of MACBETH, one must consider all the dramatic factors that contribute to the Shakespearean play. The gradual decline of the protagonist , the role portrayed by characters and the order in which the events occur, greatly influence the direction in which the development of the play takes place. After reading the text MACBETH, by Shakespeare and viewing the film version, directed by Roman Polanski, it is logical to see that ambition and the deceptive appearances of what really is, is central to the dramatic development of MACBETH.
As what critic Joseph White accurately describes as “more vicious and less pitiable,” Rupert Goold’s Macbeth is perceived by the viewers of film as a Stalin-like dictator. The halls of his palace are decorated with murals of his face. The film also illustrates the large masses of crowds. Through this perspective of Macbeth, Rupert Goold emphasizes the theme of the corrosive power of unbridled ambition.
Macbeth is an extremely violent play and is present in both the uprising and downfall of the tragic hero. Macbeth is first introduced to us by the Captain, speaking in ore of Macbeth's brave and glamorous actions. ‘‘For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name), Till he un-seamed him from the nave to th' chops.’’ Macbeth is being praised for his violent and gruesome actions of disembowelling a person, without condemnation. Shakespeare is expressing that violence is both a blessing and a curse depending on the morals behind his actions. Macbeth’s error in judgment is his constant and excessive killing of people. This derives from his for
...hey ignite reactions that result in fate with an almost good-humored behavior. They give Macbeth knowledge that causes him to make decisions he would not and could not have made without that knowledge. To remove these three characters would remove the origin of the motivations of Macbeth's actions, from his murder of King Duncan to his own tragic defeat. Duncan, Banquo, Lady Macduff, Young Siward, Macbeth himself - they would all still be alive had the witches not awoken ambition and fear in Macbeth's heart. The “audience's [belief] of whether or not the witches actually have power over Macbeth influence their interpretation of whether his actions result from personal choice or from external influence” (Riedel 1). The witches are an important part of Macbeth's plot, as the information they reveal sets things in motion. They are the catalysts of Macbeth’s demise.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare, is a play that exhibits fighting and bloodshed. Regardless of social views, there are instances where violence is considered an honorable deed. However, some characters in the play blur the lines between right and wrong and their actions make blood shedding a point of discussion. Through the course of the play violence is the most prominent theme.
The witches influence Macbeth in his achievements and awaken his ambitions. They give him a false sense of security with their apportions of truths. The witches are the ones who made the idea of killing Duncan into Macbeth’s mind. They also told him that he would become thane of Cawdor and later would become king of Scotland. Macbeth wants to know more.
William Shakespeare’s usage of stage techniques and language effects in Macbeth are extraordinarily used in creating gradual tension from the moment King Duncan is killed by Macbeth, followed by a short relaxation period and then increasing it again until the climax point of the act of regicide. The reader and the audience are kept in suspense right from the beginning of the play until the final scene.
This specific action consequently resulted in Macbeth’s level of morality to continually decline as he is acutely aware of his own tyranny. Therefore Macbeth attempts to forget the horrific deed he has committed and be the figure that orders and disorders. Our perception of Macbeth being a wise and loyal soldier is now eroded, as we start to view Macbeth constantly questioning his own actions, and is also impelled to perpetrate further atrocities with the intention of covering up his previous wrong-doings.
