In the novel, “A Long Way Gone”, a war is beginning. Villages are being attacked by the Rebels. People are being raped, murdered, or forced to join the war. Children are separated from their parents, some never seeing them again. The acts of violence in the novel “A Long Way Gone” are caused by the Rebels attacking villages. Ishmael, the main character, and his brother and friends are once caught by the rebels. Ishmael’s brother, Junior is one of the boys chosen by the rebels to join them. The rebels were going to soon force Junior to kill his younger brother. The rebels were distracted before they could force Junior to pull the trigger on his younger brother. The violence from the war started other acts of violence, like forcing people to kill other people and become a rebel. …show more content…

Even after they escaped and even after Ishmael got separated from his brother, Ishmael kept running into violence. When Ishmael went to a village after staying in the woods for a while, he found a group of boys he had known from school. He walked with the group, to many villages. The group of boys found a beach and found a little joy in it. They loved the view. They played ball. They had fun. But as they kept walking down the beach, they found another village. In this village, the chief of the village had his men steal the boys sneakers as punishment for coming to his village. The chief called them devils. He believed that the young group of boys were part of the Rebels. When he again found the boys, he almost killed them until he found Ishmaels cassette tapes. The chief realized that the boys he was about to have killed, were in fact just boys. The acts of the Rebels had him ready to kill anyone without even talking to them to find out who they were, to protect him, his people, and his
