In the chapter, How to Get into Medical School Part 1, Vincent Lam uses comparison and inner thoughts of the two characters to highlight their difference in expression of feeling. While Ming keeps her feelings underneath and is scared to show the way she feels, Fitzgerald has no problem showing that he wants a relationship to work. In the passage, by entering Ming’s thoughts, the reader is able to see she wants him to know how she truly feels but she is scared of what could possibly come.
At the beginning of the paragraphs it starts off with Fitz saying “[he] really will be pleased for [her]” (17) when she goes to medical school while Ming only replies with “thank you.” Once it actually goes into her thoughts, it shows that she actually means …show more content…

It is shown that Fitzgerald is quite nervous and unsure while Ming is very confident in what she does. This becomes very evident when the way they both admit that they have a slight interest for each other. Ming is the first one to bring them up and stands firm on the fact they can’t have a relationship. Fitz, on the other hand, dodges the topic a few times and gets embarrassed by the fact she knows. Later on in the chapter, the little thoughts that stop her getting close come up during a late night phone call. Ming decides to tell Fitzgerald about the horrible story of her older cousin and the sexual assault. This shows Fitz the reason of her being distant and also how she does want to disappoint her parents; despite everything he wants to make it work. He continues on to admit that he really does love her and she replies with “it may be the same for me, but I’m afraid of it.” (30) While both of them have the same feelings for each other and are willing to try, they both have different feelings towards the relationship itself.
