Veith's Calling Analysis

Upon our creation and entry into this world we are given a calling. This calling will act as the blueprint to our life, guiding us to what it is God wants us to do. In Jeremiah 29: 11 states “for I know the plans I have for you [. . .] plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (King James Version, 2011, p. 1263). Once you have deciphered and accepted your plan, you will have a sense of purpose and fulfillment in your life. For our calling is not just for our own personal gain but for making a difference in the world, this is exemplified in Veith’s God at Work. In the chapter Veith states “marriage is a tangible manifestation of the relationship between Christ and the Church (2011, p. 79-80). The wife is to see Christ in her husband and love him as God loves her. While the husband is to love his wife like God loved the church. Being God put his all into the church to watch it grow and develop, the husband should do the same for his wife. If both partners are performing their roles adequately they will harbor the love of Christ within their relationship. The chapter also references precreation within the family. With the birth of a new child the parents are to care for the baby and bring them up in the way of the Lord. By looking at the family unit it is clear all members of the family have a specific role in which they function. The parents are to act as providers, educators, and express their love. While the children are to play, learn, and abide by their parents. At one point the church use to be the center of the community, but as time has begun to pass many people are stepping away from the church establishing their own beliefs. Therefore it is important to note that our first calling to the church occurs when you decide to be a Christian (Veith, 2011, p. 116). In the Baptist community in order to be a Christian one must profess their faith to the Lord and agree to set out and do the work of the Lord. Once the person has accepted their duties they will be baptized in the name of the Godhead. This baptism is a symbol of renewing, washing away all our sins. This is a powerful notion within the Christian community because it brings full circle God’s reasons for dying on the cross for his people. However this is only the beginning of the Christian journey. As one finds their place within their church home they will be partaking in communion where they will come together with others in order to preach or listen to the word of the Lord.
