I believe in the value of leadership. Leadership can take many forms. When you take advantage of it, you will thrive. Authoritarian leaders lead by direction and command such as in the military. Inspirational or authoritative leaders lead by cooperation and example. I believe an example of an authoritarian leader would be Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific during World War II and General George S. Patton, Commander of the Third Army in Europe. Without a good, strong leader who can make the best decision for the success, or survival of the group, business or, for that matter, the country, failure is predictable. In one situation I was going to race with a friend, he was a better skipper than I was so he skippered. My friend was very laid back and was not good at making decisions quickly which you need while sailing. We got out on the water on a sunny day it was hotter than hell outside and even hotter out on the water. We were out to win, but we didn't we came in last for 4 of the 5 races for that morning. At 12:30 we went in to the beach to have lunch, my friend and I sat next to each other and me said that I could skipper in the afternoon. When we got out on the water after lunch it was even hotter than the morning. It took the race committee about a half an hour to get out on the water. We started racing at 2:00pm and went all the way to 4:30pm. We raced in 4 races and in the last race we won at the line because of a penalty, but before that we had to get into the position to get the penalty. By then we were on the starboard tack and we were down wind so we had the right of way. We were at this time about 50 meters away from the finish line and they were gaining on us and then they made the mistake of turning to far and they hit us. They had to slow down 2 boat lengths so we pulled ahead and crossed the line and won the race. If it wasn't for the cooperations of my friend and the things I learned at camp and from my grandpa the out come of that race would have been different. I believe different situations require different kinds of leadership. The situations Generals Patton and MacArthur found themselves in required one kind of leadership and it worked. On the other hand, this summer my group found itself in a situation that required another model. The best leader knows which type of leadership to use in which situation, and then uses
