There are many different views of abortion. The Libertarian view states that a fetus is not a human until it is socially responsive after birth. A person with a conservative view believes that abortion is justified if the mother’s life is in danger. The potentiality view says abortion should not be allowed because the unborn fetus is an “it” because it is not a person, therefore abortion should be allowed. The evolving value view says that the moral standing evolves toward the end. A person with the moderate view says that abortion is based on circumstances, such as rape. A person with the ensoulment view believes abortion is wrong because it goes against their religious views.
Parents can refuse life sustaining treatment if the person would return t a state of health, the person would return to a “compromised” existence, or the treatment would prologue a death. The utility of an action is determined by the extent to which it produces happiness. “No action itself is right or wrong”. Because Dr. Joan was a doctor she found this loop hole, most other women would not have known. Putman was looking at the decision of refusal of treatment in a Utilitarian view. Would this baby dying establish the greatest amount of “good.” The doctors believed it was morally wrong to refuse the baby treatment that would prologue her life. However, the baby’s family would be happier and the baby would not suffer emotional or physically if she went without the life saving treatment and passed away.
