Unsafe Sex is the Worst Sex Viona Joseph Section: 0288 TA: Josh Crosby September 19, 2014 In today’s American society, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) also known as sexually transmitted diseases, still remain as a growing sexual health burden. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2001, one in five people in the U.S. were infected by a sexually transmitted disease. The CDC also estimated that every year 15 million people in the U.S. will be infected by a sexually transmitted infection. STIs are infections or diseases that can be passed on from one person to another during unprotected sexual contact. Sexually transmitted diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. According to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute, there are about 20 different types of sexual infections; the most common are syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes, bacterial vaginosis viral hepatitis, trichomoniasis, human papillomavirus, and HIV/AIDS. Some of the symptoms of these diseases include: rashes, swollen gland, itching/burning sensation around the genitals, painful urination, abnormal discharges, and discomfort during intercourse (Sexual Conditions Health Center, 2014). Often times, sexually transmitted diseases are known to be “silent epidemics” because most of the infections are asymptomatic, meaning that there are no signs of any infection or disease present in one’s body. Asymptomatic infections include human papillomavirus, chlamydia, genital herpes, hepatitis B virus, bacterial vaginitis and several others (Van, 1989).
