With an excess of information readily available on the internet it can become difficult to distinguish reliable sources from untrustworthy sources. Being able to identify a reliable source is an essential skill needed to be owned in order to establish an individual’s credibility. In order to be able to authenticate a source as credible, it must first be evaluated and examined thoroughly.
First off, before viewing the information a source has to offer the bibliographic information the source gives should be assessed. Some articles have bibliographic citations that lay the information out clearly. Bibliographic citations are mainly found in library catalogs and article databases. Details about the source such as the author, publication, and a brief summary of the information is given. The author's credibility should be taken into account. If the author holds an area of expertise on the topic they are speaking on this indicates credibility. The title of the work should be taken into consideration. If the title does not fit into the category of information you are searching for then it can be dismissed as a source. One of the biggest indicators of a site being untrustworthy is when it is biased or overly opinionated. If the topic you are researching for includes opinions, are the opinions supported with sound reasoning? If so, then the source is possibly usable. Consider the author's or organizations purpose for presenting the material. Does the purpose seem emotionally motivated or meant to sway an individual’s opinion in a certain direction?
