The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a very significant memorial. I have always been interested in our Nation’s history and the people who are a big part of it. I am so excited to visit our Countries capital and the monuments that lie there. I am very intrigued in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier because it is a way to honor our people. Throughout all my years of history in school I have learned how intense wars can be. For those that make it out alive it is a blessing. But there are some that couldn’t hold on anymore and we are so fortunate to honor them. But some of the people that fought can’t be identified but they are just as important. I am so thankful and grateful that I have people looking out for me and my safety, and everyone’s safety. I know that I can’t do as much for them as they did for me because I can’t fight in a war, however I can show my gratitude by honoring them in this ceremony. The wreath laying ceremony is a very prestigious ceremony that is very significant. I think it would be very rewarding to lay the wreath because that is a way for me to show my thankfulness for the soldiers and a way to mourn their loss. I felt this morbid and realistic presence of the soldiers and for a mere second felt the gloom and menace of the war they were in. I walked around the site to gather more information on what the memorial was dedicated to. I walked past the mural wall and as I did, I paid particular attention to the various images of people and equipment on the wall. Although controversial in its inception, Maya Lin's Vietnam War Memorial adequately fulfills the vision of Jan Scruggs, who returned home wounded from the conflict in Southeast Asia at the age of 19, for a monument to his fallen comrades in arms that would "provide a symbol of acknowledgement of the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty of those who were among the nation's finest youth."1
War memorials consist of civic memorials, war cemeteries, larger national monuments, private memorials and a variety of practical designs such as parks, dedicated to remembering those involved in a conflict. Sometimes these memorials work, but other times they do not. Simply put, Camp Logan does not memorialize World War I or the fallen troops. Aside from a historical marker located on the edge of the massive Memorial Park, there are few physical remains of the camp hidden by the wooded landscape and most visitors do not know of the camp’s existence in the first place. Also, the camp played a role in some of the darkest moments in Houston history that most would rather leave forgotten. These things, especially when combined, further take away the little bit of presence that Camp Logan has in public remembrance.

The memorial grew out of a need to heal the nation's wounds as America struggled to reconcile different moral and political points of view. In fact, the memorial was conceived and designed to make no political statement whatsoever about the war. The Memorial is a place where everyone, regardless of opinion, can come together and remember and honor those who served. The patriotism swelled in my already overfilled heart. It doesn’t matter that our country is faced with humongous issues, and that Washington is more divided than ever. What matters is those men and women who gave their lives for this country. Every man, woman, child, white, black, straight, gay, Republican, Democrat, rich or poor, should pay their respects to those who rest in eternal peace at Arlington National Cemetery.
Continuing on, the Tomb of the Unknowns is the next stop on the journey. An extravagant white marble sarcophagus symbolizes the resting place for patriotic fighters who could not be identified during the time of war. Guarding the stunning sarcophagus are Tomb Guard sentinels. These sentinels are considered the best of the elite in the United States military. The elite soldiers stride back and forth in such a beautiful rhythmic motion that it is spectacular. A wonderful feeling is aroused knowing the brave unknown soldiers are being honored for giving their lives in a terrible time of war.
Roadside memorials are seen on the side of a street or highway often times after the passing of a loved one in a car accident. While a grave marks where a body is finally laid, the roadside memorial marks the last place where a person was alive. The memorial is usually kept up by family and close friends and is decorated with flowers, messages, and a cross or plaque. However, often times controversial, these families believe that their moral authority to remember a loved one trumps any governmental regulations set in place.

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts in U.S History. In Gettysburg there were three consecutive days in July, were the most soldiers were hurt. There were a total of 51,000 soldiers who were missing, wounded, or dead (Goodheart 1). There was no place to bury all the dead. There were about 7,000 bodies of the soldiers left in the battlefield.
