At the beginning of the ceremony, “Relief commander appears on the plaza to announce the Changing of the Guard. I felt this morbid and realistic presence of the soldiers and for a mere second felt the gloom and menace of the war they were in. I walked around the site to gather more information on what the memorial was dedicated to. I walked past the mural wall and as I did, I paid particular attention to the various images of people and equipment on the wall. Lin's work, unlike most previous military monuments, rejects the emphasis on heroics in favor of a poignant, contemplative, apolitical design which conveys an almost unbearable sense of loss. Simple, graceful, and abstract, the design specified two 246.75 foot long walls of polished black southern India granite, set below grade and connected at a 125 degree angle.2 Each segment of the wall is composed of 70 panels. At their intersection, the walls are 10.1 feet high and they taper down to a height of 8 inches at their extremities.3 The largest panels have 137 lines of names.4 The smallest panels have just one line. Each line consists of five names, which were sandblasted into the polished surface by hand, rather than cut into it with machine tools.5 Currently, the monument wall lists the names of 58,175 members of the armed forces who were confirmed killed or listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War.6
In Joseph Plumb Martin’s account of his experiences in the Revolutionary War he offers unique insight into the perspective of a regular soldier, which differs from the views of generals and leaders such as popular characters like George Washington. Martin’s narrative is an asset to historical scholarship as a primary source that gives an in-depth look at how life in the army was for many young men during the War for Independence. He described the tremendous suffering he experienced like starvation and privation. He did not shy away from describing his criticism of the government who he believes did not adequately care for the soldiers during and after the war. While he may be biased because of his personal involvement as a soldier, he seems to relate accounts that are plausible without embellishment or self-aggrandizement. Overall, “A Narrative of A Revolutionary Soldier” is a rich source of information providing an overview of military experience during the war.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has struck my interest for the past few years. I have always been interested in historical events that impacted many lives. The Holocaust, the Berlin Wall, and World War I and II have always been something I take very seriously and I am very interested in learning about America’s history. The backstory behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is fascinating and after researching it more I learned new things that made me more motivated to write this essay in hopes that I get the honor of laying a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Continuing on, the Tomb of the Unknowns is the next stop on the journey. An extravagant white marble sarcophagus symbolizes the resting place for patriotic fighters who could not be identified during the time of war. Guarding the stunning sarcophagus are Tomb Guard sentinels. These sentinels are considered the best of the elite in the United States military. The elite soldiers stride back and forth in such a beautiful rhythmic motion that it is spectacular. A wonderful feeling is aroused knowing the brave unknown soldiers are being honored for giving their lives in a terrible time of war.
Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose known present day as Fort Mose was established in 1738 by a Spanish governor, Manuel de Montiano, in St. Augustine. The leader of this fort was a slave by the name of Francisco Mendez, who helped in the defense of British in 1727, and was captured by the Spanish and was later given an unconditional freedom and freed. It was the first town to house free black slaves in the United States of America who came from Carolina plantations with the help of the Indians. In return for the slaves freedom, the Spanish had to convert their religion to Catholic as well as servicing the king as he sees fit.
Mihiel. In St. Mihiel, there are four thousand one hundred and fifty three soldiers buried within the soil. Majority of the soldiers who died resulted in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient that threatened Paris. In the center of the cemetery there is a sundial with a craving of an American eagle. On the base of the craving is General Pershing’s famous quote, “Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.” According to me, General Pershing quote signifies that as time goes on the accomplishments of the soldiers would remain known and never forgotten. Not only is there a carving of an American eagle, but there is a mosaic portraying an angel sheathing his sword. Also, on the two walls of the museum there are two hundred and eighty four names of the missing soldiers. Washington, DC is a spectacular place. This being my first time in DC, I was in awe of everything and all the historical places I encountered. The presence of the monuments and history is what made the capitol so magnificent. Having only read about the Lincoln memorial, I never had the chance to experience the sensation of being inside such an honorable place of importance. The imposing white marble walls of the memorial and the many people surrounding it could be seen from afar. Arriving at the location, an unknown feeling came over me. I was experiencing history in a whole different level. When I think about a memorial, the term remembrance comes to mind. Seeing the statue of Abraham Lincoln brought pieces of memories from history class and evoked thoughts of what it might have felt like to be in his shoes. I was astonished by the statue’s enormousness and how grand Abraham Lincoln looked in his chair. The size of the statue compared to pictures from books and elsewhere was surreal. Abraham Lincoln was a very “powerful and prominent individual” in the history of our nation, the statue’s design and size reflected upon that. Looking around me, I wanted to know what the others thoughts were on seeing his statue and how they felt in that building. I finally had the courage to ask one or two people what they thought; they all had the same appreciation as me. Hearing about an important person or learning about them in a history book gives you vast knowledge but it doesn’t evoke the feeling of utter appreciation as the memorial does. The tomb of the unknown soldier, also known as the Tomb of the Unknowns, is a monument that opened on November eleventh nineteen twenty-one. The tomb contains the remains of four unidentified soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The tomb is a reminder of America 's pastime. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a vital part of American history because it represents all the men and women who have selflessly given their lives for American freedom.
Not only are military heroes buried at Arlington, but memorials have also been built to honor others who have given their lives for America. The memorials that are located throughout Arlington tell a story about people throughout American history (Reef 43). Each year families walk the endless rows of white head stones at Arlington in order to pay their respects to the ones that have given their lives for America.
We all have them, men and women we know who have served in the military. They are people we admire, look up to, and respect for the sacrifices they made and their courage in the face of adversity on and off the battlefield. For hundreds of years, our military troops have sacrificed their lives for America’s freedom. They have never stopped giving of themselves day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. Whether it’s on the grounds of Iraq or the mountains in Afghanistan, people are fighting for our freedom. Adam Koopmann, Military Police Officer, has consistently achieved these accomplishments on a daily basis in order to fight for our country. This means that we should not wage war when war should not be waged. We should try all possibilities in search for a solution to peace. When we get involved in warfare that could have been avoided lives are lost. After these lives have passed they are honoured at Arlington National Cemetery, one of the most famous U.S. military resting place. People from all over the globe come to see Arlington Cemetery and the many people that have pledged their lives to the United States. War heroes, the Eternal Flame, The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier, and former presidents are all located there.
