The crowd moves quietly to the seats. The area is silent except with the click of the guard’s shoes. The relief commander walks out and announces The Changing of the Guard ceremony is about to commence; as he is talking, a new guard walks out ready to take the place of the guard on duty. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier contains three men: a testament to all of the unknown fallen soldiers. The tomb continues to honor these soldiers through the ceremonies and symbolism behind the guards’ movements. On March 4th, 1921, Congress approved the commissioning of a tomb of an unknown soldier of World War 1, this soldier will be buried in the new Memorial Amphitheater (“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”). Allan Jay Kellogg Jr. during a ceremony at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, May 17, 1984” (“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”). On Memorial Day of the same year, President Reagan presented the Medal of Honor to the Unknown. “The President also acted as next of kin by accepting the interment flag at the end of the ceremony”(“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”). Regiment, also known as the Old Guard. The guard is changed every hour on the hour. Except, during the summer months during park hours the guard is changed every 30 minutes. At the beginning of the ceremony, “Relief commander appears on the plaza to announce the Changing of the Guard. Soon the new sentinel leaves the Quarters and unlocks the bolt of his or her M14 rifle to signal to the relief commander to start the ceremony” (“The Changing of the Guard”).
