I am currently applying for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at University of Michigan. When I was young, I have dreamed of going beyond the boarders of my hometown, eager to explore the rest of the world. My spirit of adventure only grows along with time. As mentioned above, I would like to step into places for volunteering work. I believed I am made to improve and care for those in need, not for anything but I believe I am responsible. It is known that U-Mich grants students great programs under The Michigan Difference. If I am able to be accepted as a student at U-Mich, I would like to participate in the Undergraduate Research opportunity Program under the LSA. Providing post-trauma counseling is not for a short period of time, even now, the Japanese in Fukushima need psychological therapy after the nucleic explosion triggered by the tsunami in 2011. Despite the extended period of time needed, I believe I am determined for what I would like to do. I hope my effort could arouse people's attention in providing help to those in need, to put their feet in others shoes. Even so, there is a broad field of study under the branch of Development, Psychopathology, and Mental Health (DPMH), yet I specifically interested about the attitudes and persuasion aspect of social study. According to USNews, social psychology of University of Michigan has always been ranking the first. Research under attitudes and persuasion aims to investigate the relationship of how the attitude changes behavior or perhaps behavior influences attitude. It is mesmerizing of how to be persuasive, once we could get a good grip on how to persuade people, their minds could be easily manipulated. The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. I feel this college will provide an ingenious culture within the science field, therefore rendering myself with the building blocks necessary to later pursue the medical field. Not only does UNCW devote itself towards their student’s undergraduate years, but also by providing Professional pathways such as Pre-Medicine, students such as myself can go into Professional schools better prepared. In addition to my interest in the academics the school has to offer, I also marvel at the amount of extracurricular activities available to the student body. An HBCU is a college/university that embeds the nature of power and black excellence; a place with surroundings that doesn’t force you, but makes you want to push yourself to become a better person inside and out, and throughout the community. It is my intention to utilize the acquired knowledge—specific to such disciplines— to benefit those who seek assistance through the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (“VA”) for treatment of combat related post traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”). Although I am an active duty military dependent and have considerable insight to a population in the military-culture affected by PTSD, which is beneficial experience-wise, this factor alone does not allow for preference in employment in this particular field. The institutional means to achieve this goal requires and involve four years of undergraduate study, two years in a Master’s degree program and an additional five-plus years of doctoral studies. This is only the first in a three-part cultural goal that is necessary to begin the process of effective participation and achievement in employment in this field. The first part of this goal would be to obtain a Bachelor’s degree, proceed to a Master’s—begin employment and ultimately, while employed, commence doctoral studies. In addition to the considerable comprehensive strain on an average student pursuing such educational goals, there is also a significant financial responsibility placed on my family. Acceptance as a credible authority in this field requires this extensive period of schooling for the development and acquisition of collective education and experience in order to be considered effective and respected as a contributor or provider of care in this
Judith Herman, from Trauma and Recovery, said “Traumatic events are extraordinary, not because they occur rarely, but rather because they overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to life” (John A. Rich, Theodore Corbin, & Sandra Bloom, 2008. Trauma does not involve the same experiences for everyone; each individual is unique in that they, and only they, can decide what is traumatic for them. Before discussing what positive things can come from suffering a traumatic experience, one must first understand that negative things can arise as well. Trauma “shatters people’s basic assumptions about themselves and the world they live in”. Three basic assumptions are challenged by trauma: (1) the belief in personal invulnerability; (2) the perception of the world as meaningful and comprehensible; and (3) the view of ourselves in a positive light” (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009, p. 67)....
I told someone when I was younger that I wanted to cure people. 4 years ago, I told one of my teachers I wanted to find the best school that would allow me to do that. A year ago, I went to Wayne State and I found it, my major and my school. Being interested in science and math has been a major component in my studies and choosing a career path. Devoting time to helping and working with others doing volunteer work makes the decision a whole lot better. Majoring in Pharmacy is the right path and Wayne State University will give me the best chance at following that path.
I am a dedicated, focused student looking to push the boundaries of Engineering Physics with creative out of the box thinking. I have the drive to be successful and positively represent UBC Engineering Physics. I have a passion for physics and math which is why I believe this program is so appealing and a perfect choice. Having already started, run and sold a successful landscaping company, I have experience in entrepreneurship and have determined being an entrepreneur is something I want to pursue in the future. I believe Engineering Physics would give me the opportunity and breadth of knowledge to make my entrepreneurial vision a reality and allow me to find solutions to the issues that will impact the future of humanity. For some students a report card is an accurate reflection of their abilities, aspirations, and future work habits. Many friends of mine have flawless, or near flawless, report cards. Straight A's and weighted GPA's well over 4.0 grace their every progress report, and I am certain they will continue this streak of academic excellence well into the future. For others, C's, D's and fail's are a normal occurrence, and much like the straight A students, I have no doubt that they will continue down this path. But for some students, like myself, a report card is not an accurate picture of academic ability. I am not afraid to admit - to friends, family, or schools I intend to apply to - that my grades aren't good. I haven't had a GPA anywhere near 4.0 in at least 3 years, and at times this fact makes me proud. While I usually earn B's or C's in my classes, there are a few bright spots on my academic record. I am in the 98th percentile of the SAT test, and in the 99th on the ACT. I achieved a 5 on the AP Computer Science test, and despite a C in my AP Physics class, I managed a 4 on the final exam. On top of that, in my two years on El Camino Real High School's Academic Decathlon team I have been the highest scoring C Student in all of the Los Angeles Unified School District twice in a row, placed third in the state of California, and look forward to a promising season this year.

Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
The American athlete’s adage, ‘no pain, no gain’ is applicable to the concept of PTG. In traumatic experiences, pain and suffering are not sought, but the wisdom and growth that can arise out of the suffering is good and can be desirous. The result is a person who has grown and is better (more mature, wiser, stronger, and more benevolent, etc.) for having had the struggle.
