Violence Differences An analysis of the three different types of violence shown in The Iliad.

What sort of violence do you show or see in your daily life? Everyday there is always someone or something that just makes you angry. Just like Achilles in the epic poem The Iliad. A quick background story of Achilles is when he was a young boy his mother dipped him into the River of Styx. All of him was totally immersed except his heel, which makes him invincible other than that one spot on his heel. The definition of linguistic violence is someone who is using words to manipulate, influence, control, and/or trying to hurt another person. This violence is shown multiple times, an example is when Achilles tries to use language to twist words into getting him the girl, but Achilles is not good with words, not like Odysseus so Achilles ends up losing the girl and ends up pouting in his tent. Now linguistic violence is used sometimes without the person even knowing it. It is called the ripple effect, when you or another person affects another’s judgment without anyone knowing. You affect so many people in a day to day life, once a ripple starts, no one can stop it. The definition of psychological abuse is characterized by another person subjecting or exposing another to behavior that may result in trauma. This usually occurs when there is a power imbalance which is exactly what is happening in The Iliad. The men, just like I said in the previous statement, think they hold the power. So in their mind in order to keep the power on their side they must treat women like they are property. Women have no say in anything, women must just listen and obey and not ask any questions. If they do they will be severely punished physically. The men aren’t just psychologically hurting the women, oh no, they must physically hurt them as well to get their attention. There are many examples in this epic poem showing the men pick on the women. Now the men have a lot of power over the women, but I don’t think they have all the power. Women are what the men are fighting over, so the women know how to manipulate the men to get just what they want. The women are smart by letting the men “think” they have all the power in the relationship. So both sides are psychologically playing the
