Sufferers develop low self-esteem from thinking that they are different from not being able to communicate properly and thinking that other people are thinking of them in a humiliating and negative way. Often people with social anxiety believe that they are worse than others, and are not loved. Depression soon arrives after thinking negative thoughts for such a long time that it over takes them and consumes their minds. Depression can lead to the person having suicidal thoughts which can eventually lead them to taking their own life. Because of the severity of social anxiety, it should be treated as a mental illness.
Depression in children is qualitatively different from depression in adults – these people are more at risk for more severe illnesses in adulthood, as well, which suggests that depression in young people has the potential to be particularly problematic. 60% of adolescents with depression will have recurrences in adulthood and also have a higher rate of suicide throughout their life (Clark, Jansen, & Cloy, 2012). The symptoms of childhood depression might be mistaken for normal mood swings as pertinent to changing developmental stages, and is often presented as irritability and negative attitudes. Diagnosis of depression in children is difficult for this reason, and therefore it must be stressed how careful one must be when diagnosing mental illness in children (“Depression”, 2014). Furthermore, there is a stigma against labeling a child as depressed, which might make it even harder to diagnose depression in children.

They may be unable to complete school, have trouble interviewing and getting a job, and may be incapable of friendships or romantic relationships, making them feel alone or even ashamed. Although not as common, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is another form of anxiety that can wreak havoc on someone’s life. OCD causes one to suffer from unwanted thoughts that they cannot seem to let go of (obsessions), causing them to repeatedly perform ritualistic behaviors or routines in an effort to ease their anxiety. Agoraphobia is considered one of the more serious anxiety disorders. A common misconception is that agoraphobia is a fear of public places.
Simple phobias, also called specific phobias, are fears of a specific thing, such as spiders or being in a closed place. Most simple phobias develop during childhood and eventually disappear. Specific phobia is a marked fear of a specific object or situation. It is a category for any phobias other than agoraphobia and social phobia. The categories of specific phobias are 1. situational phobias such as: fear of elevators, airplanes, enclosed places, public transportation, tunnels, or bridges; 2. fear of the natural environment such as: storms, water, or heights; 3. animal phobias such as: fear of dogs, snakes, insects, or mice; 4. blood-injection-injury phobia such as: fear of seeing blood or an injury, or of receiving an injection.

Those that suffer from social anxiety can be subjected to other disorder such as “depressive, substance use and other anxiety disorders” (Mehtalia, Vankar, 2004). Social anxiety can be caused by an experience that has tainted their view of social events. It can also be caused by lack of experience at social events. Many adolescents have struggled and are struggling with social anxiety. This state of unease has many consequences as stated by Mehtalia & Vankar “Adolescents with SAD had more associated difficulties in coping with studies.”
Social phobia is an "irrational anxiety elicited by exposure to certain types of social or performance situations, also leading to avoidance behavior." Many people, in the world today, suffer from this phobia. Public speaking is the leading fear in today’s society. People will go to the high extremes to get out of a speech or an event where they are the center of attention. How many times have you been nervous about giving a speech in front of your class?
Social phobia is the fear of social situations or performing in public. When people have this fear, they may be embarrassed by symptoms of having a panic attack or anxiety. A good example of this type of phobia is people who don’t like public speaking. This would be due to mild social phobia (or major, depending how badly you hate it). The final category of phobia is a Specific phobia.
