Introduction According to the International Diabetes Foundation, India has the most number of individuals suffering from diabetes than any other country in the world as of 2013. The disease affects more than 7.1% of India’s adult population. The estimate of people dying of diabetes every year, in India, stands at 1 million. The prevalence of diabetes is rising as a result of ageing population and unhealthy lifestyles. In developing countries such as India, long-term health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, pose major challenges for health care systems. In the past decade, various studies have shown otherwise and research is being conducted to understand how gender differences might play a role in health related quality of life of individuals with diabetes. Gale and Gillespie, ( 2001) attempted at studying the gender differences in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Their review article mentions an important finding. It was found that in the case of type 1 diabetes, if the fathers had type 1 diabetes, the children were more likely to develop the disease than the children whose mothers had type 1 diabetes. Whereas, in the case of type 2 diabetes, it was more commonly transmitted from the mother. In a study titled ‘Type 2 diabetes: perceptions of quality of life and attitudes towards diabetes from a gender perspective’ by Svenningsson, I. et. al (2011), it was found that both men and women with diabetes and obesity had a poorer quality of life as compared to individuals with diabetes and normal weight. However, the results of the study indicated that obesity caused additional stress on women with diabetes as compared to men with diabetes. The article also revealed that depression is more common in females with diabetes than in men with diabetes. In a study by Wang, H. and Yeh, M. (2013), it was reported that the domains of ‘close personal relationships’ and ‘sex life’ on the ADDQoL significantly affected males.
