Contrasting Life: A Journey from America to India

Have you ever thought about how much would change in your life if you had to move to a different country? Chris, from the video, experiences a completely different life style in India. However, the two sisters experience a different life style in America. Although there are many differences in American and Indian culture, there are some similarities. Chris is a laid off computer programmer that is trying to find a new job to support his family. He lives in an apartment with his girlfriend and their newborn. He has to relocate to India because they have many jobs in telemarketing. In India, they call a call center instead of telemarketing. Chris lives with the family of Ravi, the manager of the call center. Ravi lives with his wife and his parents. Ravi’s wife does not have a job because she is required to take care of their home. Telemarketing is the lowest paying job in the U.S., yet it is the highest paying job in India. Unlike the U.S., employees do not get to be able to get off on the holidays in India. The author, Bharati Mukherjee, states, “Mira is happier to live in America as an expatriate Indian. However, I need to feel like I am is part of the community.” Mira does not like the new rules of the government, but Bharati just tries to find ways to adapt. Both of them have felt like the country they live in has betrayed them. In the past I have felt like I lived in two different worlds. In high school there were always cliques, and I felt like I needed to find a place I fit in. I had some really preppy friends and some that really did not get much attention from others also. I felt like I fit into both groups. I was not the most popular in school, but I was not the person anyone ever spoke to either. I was just a normal teenager and tried to fit into both
