ood morning, I am pleased to be able to write to you today concerning a town near and dear to me. A great Philosopher once said “Home is where your heart is”, and if that’s true, then my home is always going to be Tucson. My Thesis is pretty simple—Tucson is America’s best city. To prove this today we will be covering different areas. We will discuss the History and evolution of the City, famous people from my home state, economic contributions made to the United States, and finally my own personal ties to the City. Then I will once again state my belief in the City of Tucson. To understand why I love the Tucson of today, let’s take a moment to see where it came from. Tucson was founded in 1775 by Spanish soldiers claiming the territory as Presidio Augustin del Tucson. It was actually used as a strategic military location for a time. Tucson even saw the Confederate army take up residency. Industry came to town in the form of power plants and defense contractors. These, along with the establishment of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, helped pumped even more lifeblood into the old pueblo. The University of Arizona became increasingly popular for its year-round offering of temperate climate. Tucson’s climate would serve to benefit the growth of the City even more than expected. Companies that needed corrosion-free storage found a welcome location in the dry desert. This led to aircraft companies as well as car companies moving their long term storage operations to Tucson. Some of the most famous planes of their time are sitting in Tucson in aircraft “boneyards”. Robert D. Kaplan’s articles “Travels into America’s Future” present a description of Tucson, Arizona as it stood in 1998. His articles are based entirely on his personal experiences with the city and with it’s Mexican neighbors to the south, and while somewhat entertaining, contain vast oversights and discrepancies that make his outsider standing obvious to any native reader.
This is due to the fact that the earthquakes in Arizona don’t usually have an epicenter within the state’s borders. The first damaging earthquake known to have an epicenter within Arizona’s borders occurred on January 25th, 1906. The first known earthquake in Arizona with an epicenter in the state also occurred the same year as the great San Francisco earthquake which is the deadliest earthquake to ever occur within the United States. The shocks of the 1906 Arizona earthquake were strongest in Flagstaff and some of the shocks traveled as far as Socorro, New Mexico. Schools in Flagstaff were shut down as a result of the effects from the earthquake.
I thought that Diane Guerrero who is an American actress speech about her family’s deportation was interesting. She recently appeared on an immigration themed of Chelsea handler’s talk show. Guerrero is the citizen daughter of immigrant parents. Guerrero mentioned how her family was taken away from her when she was just 14 years old. “Not a single person at any level of government took any note of me. No one checked to see if i had a place to live or food to eat, and at 14, i found myself basically on my own”, Guerrero added. Luckily, Guerrero had good friends to help her. Let us begin in the 1500’s this was when Arizona was first explored by the Spanish. In 1539 Arizona was claimed for Spain by Marcos de Niza. The first Spanish settlers were established in 1752 in Tubac. There were many revolts from two tribes Pima and Papago. In 1821 Mexico acquires military control over Arizona. The United States won the Mexican war in 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave the United States most of Arizona. The rest of the state was given to the United States in 1853 by the Gadsden Purchase. Arizona discovered Copper in 1854. Arizona became a state on Valentine’s Day in 1912. This states name comes from the "Spanish word Arizonac. This term means little spring" (Bright, 2004, p. 47). The states motto became “Ditat Deus” which translates to “God enriches”.

As a slave in the late 1700's to early 1800's, Truth is used for manual labor. Many people would expect Truth has gained others respect due to her unyielding work as a slave, but in reality all she wants is the respect of being a mother. The time period in which this speech is given gives Sojourner Truth the opportunity to explain her relations with white men and women and testify to the unequal treatment she has received. Smeltertown existed as a smelting industry company-community and border town in El Paso, Texas. Through her own familial connection to Smeltertown, Monica Perales “traces the formation, evolution, demise, and collective memory of one of the largest single-industry Mexican-American communities on Mexican-US side of border.” Smeltertown, as a community, was was made up of several real and imagined social worlds that were constantly shaped by ASARCO. The community that was forged in Smeltertown served as a way of survival for its residents, allowing the influence from ASARCO to be lessened. Smeltertown tells the story of how its residents ordered their immediate socials.

Albert Camus's "Banquet Speech" is revolved around the meaning of art. He defines art as a concept of connecting communities as a whole. Although, art is not a reason for the artist to distinct themselves from the real world. Camus stands behind this when he admits his art is to foresee the truth behind this world and to see deeper into the people suffering from the truth. For him, as the writer, he believes his art work reaches out to everyone because he does not see himself any different from the readers. They are all the same. No judgements or hatred takes place in the piece of work but only the beauty of the community.
Although capitalism still exists in the greater Los Angeles, its influence is not as great as it was fifty years ago. Los Angeles continues to serve as the breeding ground for new cultures, ideologies, and alternative lifestyles. The pursuit of the American Dream has become a reality for most immigrants in LA. LA is a great place to live, party, and be. I knew little about the history of Los Angeles prior to this course, but now I am well prepared to answer the question of, “What makes Los Angeles, Los Angeles?”
