I live in Tarneit, which is next to Truganina and near the Werribee River. Thousands of years ago this land was lived on by 3 separate aboriginal clans; Marpeang bulluk tribe, Watha wurrung and the kurung jang balluk tribes which were all a part of the greater Kulin Nations. The 3 clans were bordered by the Werribee River and spoke different languages. In the last sensis in 2011, there was 1,147 Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders listed to be living in the Wyndham City Council. In 1842 Martial war was declared on aboriginal people and in 1830 the Tasmanian Aboriginal people are resettled on Flinders Island without success.* During this colonisation in 1835 a famous aboriginal lady; Trugernanner was one of only a hundred or so survivors after the war of extermination to eradicate the Aboriginal culture. Trugernanner who became a prisoner and taken from her land to Flinders Island to be Europeanised and Christianised, was amongst those who resisted conformity and her forceful, gifted and courageous behaviour towards the British made her famous with many myths and stories made up about her. In 1850 the village of Truganina was named after her and is still historically significant to indigenous Australian today.
