The triple bottom line is a framework for companies that measures more factors than the profit only. The triple bottom line consists of three P’s: people, planet and profits, meaning that the social, environmental and environmental performance is considered altogether.

The triple bottom line is incorporated into the business practices of Patagonia and it publishes an annual benefit corporation report to show the efforts they take to create a public benefit.

A form of consequentialism is utilitarianism which argues that the act that produces the greatest good for everyone is morally right. (Murphy, 2017) In relation to Patagonia, the company invests in higher quality and more sustainable materials to lessen the impact on the environment and therefore benefiting the whole world. As environmental issues affect every person on this planet, decreasing the environmental impact on of the company’s action benefits the biggest amount of people.

Deontology represents the opposite to consequentialism and argues that the morality lies within the act itself regardless of the consequences. The deontology theory considers the upholding of one’s obligations to other individuals or the society as ethically right. Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative is a part of deontology, stating that a consistent moral system arises by reason or rationality. (BBC, 2014)
Patagonia is consistent in its decision making of acting socially and environmentally responsible as they are based on deeply rooted beliefs within the company. Patagonia is following those beliefs and values in order to safe nature and reverse the environmental decline. This reasoning aligns with the ethics of Kant’s Categorical Imperative by arguing logically why they act the way they are
