Traditional Thanksgiving Food in History
The Original Thanksgiving
The original Thanksgiving meal of the Pilgrims was quite different from the Thanksgiving Dinner that is now laid out on our tables like pumpkin pie, cornbread, roasted turkey and so on. The Pilgrims celebrated a harvest festival in 1621 to thank God that he had saved their lives and guided them safely through their journey on the Mayflower and the following years of drought at Plymouth. The rain that marked the end of the drought had revived their crop of corn and other fruit and they decided to celebrate with their neighbors which were Massasoit, the chief of the Native Indians or Wampanoags, and his family. The chief came with all his extended family that consisted of ninety people and stayed for three days.
As things were there were only four grown up married ladies among the

Goose and duck, which were traditional European centerpieces for Christmas dinner have now been displaced by ham and are now sometimes served in place of the Thanksgiving turkey.
In a few areas on the West Coast of the US, Dungeness crab (a species of crab that inhabits eelgrass beds and water bottoms from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska to Santa Cruz, California. Its binomial name, Cancer magister, simply means "master crab" in Latin. They measure as much as 25 cm (10 inches) in some areas off the coast of Washington, but typically are under 20 cm (8 inches). They are a popular delicacy, and are the most commercially important crab in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the western states generally) is a common alternate main dish, as crab season starts in early November.
Variant recipes may be used for turkey such as a Chinese recipe for goose could be used on a similarly sized American bird. Vegetarians or vegans may try tofurkey a tofu-based dish with imitations turkey flavor. In Alaskan villages, sometimes whale meat is
Nathaniel Philbrick tells the story of the Pilgrims, beginning with them breaking away from the Church of England, emigrating to Holland, and eventually to America on the Mayflower. He talks about the relationship they had with the "Strangers" or nonbelievers that accompanied them on their adventure. He tells stories about disease, death, deception, and depression. I had never thought about it, but you know some of those people had to be suffering from depression. He tells of joys but mostly of hardships and as he describes some of the first meetings with the Native Americans. His description of the first Thanksgiving is not the same as the pictures I have seen all of my life.

Thanksgiving is a holiday in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Although the way holidays are celebrated over time, thanksgiving has always been a holiday feast. However, Thanksgiving is more than just eating food together with your family. For instance, some families do charity work for the poor people and create a Thanksgiving dinner for them, other family’s watch sport in addition to the food that they eat together. One part that is common at almost every Thanksgiving dinner is the type of food that is served. Families in the United States have celebrated Thanksgiving for hundreds of years, but the way it is celebrated has slightly changed from the first Thanksgiving. To be able to explain
Finding focus and the true reason of Thanksgiving and other holiday celebrations can not only make them enjoyable but meaningful and magical.
...turkey become the main part of this holiday meal after the first Thanksgiving? It would not have made sense to feast on chickens or cows because they produce useful foods such as eggs and milk. Wild turkeys were larger than chickens and easier to hunt than geese, so it made more sense to eat them on Thanksgiving. The birds are large enough to feed many people and unlike pork, turkey wasn't so common that it didn't seem like a suitable choice for a special occasion (5).
Long is able to agree with Bellah that American civil religion exists, he highlights the fact that it takes away different aspects of history and it is only applicable for certain people. Thanksgiving while it’s purpose is to bring together families and demonstrate a sense of gratitude, it does not truly highlight how it came to be. Long argues that, “a great deal of writings and discussions on the topic of American religion has been… serving to enhance, justify, and render sacred the history of European immigrants in this land” (Long 212). Thanksgiving truly came into American history from the interactions of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. Today, the story is told to children as if the relationship was perfect. When in actuality years later the Native Americans were persecuted and killed by settlers in America over land. Long is pointing out how the European immigrant’s history is made to seem pristine and in relation to Thanksgiving it is. In taking away the part of death and difficulties from the story it clouds over the truth, thus taking away the history of some American
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
Thanksgiving is undoubtedly a holiday to celebrate family. It also celebrates many other things, as the name suggests. Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks for the things that a person has rather than to wish for more things. Accomplishments and shiny cars are not part of the essence of Thanksgiving, as these do not have the inherent humbleness expected of the holiday. This air of humility and frugality, harkening back to the days of the pilgrims and Native Americans, is probably what lead Ellen Goodman to describe the holiday as a suppressing of individualism. However, the rift between individuality and family that Goodman describes in Thanksgiving is not as deep as she makes it seem, and Thanksgiving Day is hardly the only day of the
In some traditions and cultures, the items featured may also be tamales, apple cider, oyster stuffing, and rice.6 These entrees listed are examples of the foods we consume during this century’s Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving is a national holiday that we celebrate on the fourth Thursday of November each year. This celebration has been altered over many generations, and influenced through many people. Sara Josepha Hale for example, was an essential person who made a huge impact on this feast. She had the idea of creating meals such as a large turkey, for families to gather around the dinner table, and share a course while in the midst of it, being thankful for everything they have. Overall, Thanksgiving has been substantially transformed throughout the years and is now an official recognized holiday we celebrate each
Thanksgiving in my family can be described as a rambunctious cacophony of mashed starches, oversized sweaters, and a plethora of delicious smoked meats. While my mother would slave over gurgling pots of tart cranberries, spiced apples and mulled wine, my father would set off to smoke the pheasants, crack open a pale ale and listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Squanto taught the pilgrims how to get extract from maple trees, cultivate corn, avoid poisonous plants, catch fish and was an interpreter for the Pilgrims and Wampanoag (Source 7 , Source 6). The things that Squanto taught the pilgrims would help keep them alive and help build an alliance between the Wampanoag tribe. The Pilgrims planted their first harvest in the spring of 1621, and it was a successful harvest with the help of Squanto (source 6). The Pilgrims had finally experienced their first successful stepping stone to the new life they had been longing for since they had arrived and it was worth celebrating. It was Governor William Bradford that invited the Native American allies and organized the feast that would be known as first
The purpose of Thanksgiving in Canada is different from the Americans. But even though the reasons for giving thanks are different, many of the customs are the same. Canadian Thanksgiving was originally started to give thanks to God for a bountiful harvest. This was when there were lots of farmers that grew crops. Now we give thanks for everything we appreciate. Some farming families still give thanks for a good crop.
Thanksgiving is an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. In Charles Mann’s National Geographic article, America Found and Lost, discussed the first known Thanksgiving holiday dinner in English America. It was celebrated on December 4th, 1619 at Berkely Hundred, a brand new plantation around thirty miles west of James town. During the first Thanksgiving dinner the colonists ate a rather large feast which most likely involved the consumption of turkey meat. This is believed to be true based on the fact that wild turkey was beyond plentiful in the region and a common food source for both English settlers and Native Americans. Back then, turkeys were undomesticated animals who fed off of the natural food sources available to them in nature. That is no longer the case for turkeys and other poultry livestock that are utilized for human consumption. Ever since 1996, farmers in animal agriculture have been feeding genetically modified grains such as corn and oilseeds to their livestock. The multiple processes in which the birds are produced and distributed have also changed dramatically over the years. This has also inevitably led to a significant increase in the consumption levels of poultry products on a global scale. All of these factors have led to the stimulation of many countries’ economies but also caused an increased need of genetically modified animal feed in order to maintain the balance between supply and demand.
During the time of the movement west, food played an important role in the pioneers day to day life. Food played an important role during the 1800s because it kept people alive during hard times. The pioneers stored their food in many different ways, and they ate, prepared, and made their own food.
I take the turkey and set it on the counter. Then I grab the Buttermilk White bread, freshly made by my mom. She’s like Martha Stewart, you know. She grows the wheat herself. She uses some kind of mill we have in the back yard to grind it into flour. We have a cow. She milked it herself. Then she made the buttermilk to put into the bread. Anyway, that’s off the subject.
