As of the year 2015 one hundred and forty one countries still use torture. Torture which is defined as " the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain" is a travesty that still occurs in our suppose modern society. Torture is wrong on a human and moral basis, and there is no excuse why any country should still partake in the atrocity that is torture. Bear in mind that this torture isn’t just happening in uncivilized or third world countries. Premier countries such as the United States and China partake in torture as well as lesser countries like Uganda and Nigeria. Now whether we should still use torture despite knowing it is morally wrong is another debate, but torture being wrong is irrefutable. It’s like how the professor of moral philosophy at Union university David P Gushee put it “Torture Violates the dignity of human being, Torture mistreats the vulnerable and violates the demands of justice, Torture dehumanizes the torturer, and torture erodes the character of the nation it tortures.” The professor makes excellent points because when you torture someone you’re violating their dignity, and you’re treating them like an object and not a person. Torturing also changes the torturer imagine how it feels to inflict pain on another human being until you can get him to crack. It’s an experience that could haunt you for the rest of your life, and could turn you into a sadistical sociopath or led you into depression. The last point he the professor made was how if a nation truly embraces tortures it changes the very fabric of said nation. Suddenly you’re living in a nation with no morals or regard for their fellow human beings. It also creates an us vs them mentality and promotes arbitrary things such as nationalism. They’re a few countries in today’s age that still use torture albeit illegally, but the use of torture effects how the world sees these
