For this observation assignment, I have chosen Toronto Pearson Airport as my observation point. Setting observation: At the airport, absolutely everything has signs. It is a very structurally organized facility, there are information booths on all 3 floors. It is accommodating to people with disabilities starting from entering the building to accessing different gates. At each gate there are crowd barriers to organize lines to better control the crowd as well as ticket booths at all airlines. The structure is built with many windows and light coloured flooring and wall paint throughout the whole airport. In my opinion, this is to create an illusion of a larger space. Since people frequent the airport regularly and there are always crowds of people at the airport, the design of the facility will tend to play with people’s moods. The light neutral colours keep people calm and relaxed in such settings. There are also clocks everywhere to allow those travelling to be aware of their travel time to catch their flight, as well as those picking up arriving travelers to keep track of the time depending on the arrival. It’s also sectioned in a way where the people who aren’t meant to be travelling are secluded but not completely isolated from the rest of the airport. This is to make sure that those traveling are scrutinized by airport security as well as reachable if needed to be and those who are not travelling are out of reach of airways and flight gates, firstly for security and safety purposes and secondly for business purposes.
