The patient was a 92-year-old man coming in for a left shoulder x-ray after falling on an outstretched hand. Ordinarily, the protocol for a shoulder exam at the VA is an AP external rotation, an AP internal rotation, and a lateral scapula view. However, the man’s family members said his injury rated a ten on the pain scale from one to ten, which means his range of motion was quite limited. Thus, necessitating a modified protocol.
