Tooth decay can lead to both cavities and tooth loss. You may worry about losing your pretty smile, which is not unimportant, but you can also lose the ability to chew and to enunciate. Protecting your teeth from decay should be a high priority.

Eat grapes
A recent study suggests that eating grapes may help protect teeth from tooth decay. This research may also someday lead to improved fillings. That is a hope for the future, but buying grapes is something you can do today.

Up your intake of calcium and vitamin D
Some studies suggest that getting enough calcium and vitamin D protects against tooth decay and tooth loss. You can take supplements to get more of these vital nutrients, or you can eat foods rich in calcium and try to get moderate …show more content…

If dairy is not something you consume, sardines, dark leafy greens and soy bean products are also good sources of calcium. Dark leafy greens includes kale, collard greens, spinach and turnips. Soy bean options includes tofu and soy nuts.

Avoid cigarette smoke
Smoking does many bad things to the body, and not just for the smoker. It also increases health risks for friends and family who get exposed to second-hand smoke. This includes a greater risk of tooth decay. If you currently smoke, try to stop smoking or at least cut back. If you don't smoke, do your best to also avoid second-hand smoke. The effect is less extreme, but it is still there.

Do your best to prevent or control diabetes
People with diabetes are at an increased risk of tooth decay. If you do not have diabetes, you can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by keeping your weight in a healthy range, exercising regularly and eating right. If you are overweight, try to lose a few pounds. Studies show this is one of the best things you can do to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. If you are diabetic already, do your best to control your blood sugar. Poorly controlled diabetes makes this problem
