To overcome a setback is to truly achieve a goal and earn it, for what is the reward without the struggle? One such setback that has affected me, Alex Shafley, is the Congressman Tim Murphy scandal. As an applicant for multiple United States service academies in the 18th congressional district of Pennsylvania, I was looking to his office for congressional representative nomination. As a result of the media’s portrayal of him, he decided to step down from office directly in the middle of the critical part in the nomination process. Whether his dilemma is true or false, I find his actions dishonorable. This year the interviews for his nomination process were cancelled and replaced with an essay. I too made a mistake. I failed to check my email to receive the prompt until I was called down to the Mount Pleasant Guidance Office and instructed to do so. On Friday October 13th 2017, I viewed the prompt at roughly 2:00 PM, 2 hours after the deadline to turn in the essay. During a subsequent phone call to the office of Congressman Murphy, I was informed my deadline was extended until 5:00 PM. Sensing the urgency of my new opportunity, as a result of my mistake, I opted out of speaking with my fellow football captains at the pep assembly that day, in trade for starting my nomination essay. Saving my progress and heading home at the end of the school day, I continued writing at my house for the next hour and a half. That evening my football team faced the Yough Cougars, and most of my other teammates were partaking in the usual pre-game rituals of resting and mentally preparing for the game.
