Buddhists focus on what an individual can do morally in order to achieve nirvana. “Buddhists believe that individuals can overcome the misery in the world and reach their own Buddha status by a process of mental and moral purification. Morality also asks how one determines right from wrong and this is illustrated in the religion of Buddhism by the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. There are two paths that a man who has given up the world must not take; the practice of attachment and the practice of asceticism. However, there is a middle path which opens eyes, bestows understanding, leads to peace of mind, higher wisdom, to full enlightenment, and to nirvana; the Noble Eightfold Path.
The first of the Four Noble Truths is the noble truth suffering which states that birth brings pain and decay, disease, and death is painful. In other words these five aggregates that spring from attachment, the conditions of individuality and their cause, are painful and this is is the truth concerning suffering. The second noble truth is the truth concerning the origin or suffering. It is the craving for gratification of passions, or the craving for a future life, or the craving for success in the present life. The third noble truth is the truth concerning the destruction of the suffering. It is the laying aside of, the getting rid of, the being free from, and no longer harboring the thirsts of the cravings of life. The fourth and final noble truth is the truth concerning the destruction of sorrow and this id the Noble Eightfold Path. By acknowledging the Four Noble Truths and being aware of them one has taken a step to moral purification.

It is believed that once an individual has completed all four stages of life successfully the will then reach enlightenment. The Buddhist worldview has more of explanatory power because it primarily focuses on one’s morality by having multiple paths that an individual can take to reach nirvana. I believe that their worldview is plausible and is commonly accepted because every human being should strive to do the right thing by not being selfish, respecting others, not doing harm to others, being charitable, not lying etc. As far as existential viability, their worldview does a great job on assisting one in navigating through life. By assisting individuals to develop mental and moral purification, Buddhist are guiding one to be able to reach full enlightenment and live a life like the Buddha.
In order to understand the concepts of the Four Noble Truths, one needs to understand the aim of Buddhist practice. “The aim of Buddhist practice is to cure craving, the desire conditioned by ignorance that leads to suffering” (Demoss 1).2 Buddhism advocates meditation, and a “…goal of Buddhist meditation is to produce right mindfulness, an alert awareness of what is happening in body, mind, and world at the present moment” (Demoss 318).3 “Traditionally, ‘right action’ is defined in Buddhist ethics by the five percepts: do not kill, do not steal, do not engage in illicit sex, do not lie, and do not become intoxicated” (Demoss 319).4 “According to Buddhism a person does not have an intrinsic permanent changeless identity. Buddhism was founded on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama about 2,600 years ago in India. The enlightenment is like no other. Calmly seated under the Bodhi tree, Gautama Buddha realized that the right way to achieve the ultimate goal is the middle path, not the two extremes of either extreme sensual indulgence, or extreme self-torment. In order to realize this path, it took the Buddha a long 35 years. For the first 29 years of his life, he indulged in sensual pleasures as a prince, and then for 6 years after leaving his palace in search for the answered to his questions about the meaning of life, he tormented his body to the extremes.
In Peter Harvey’s, An Introduction to Buddhist Ethics, Buddhist values are explained to be centered around the goal of ending suffering. By overcoming greed and attachment, and hatred and delusion, one can end suffering by resolving the roots of unwholesome action. Through generosity and sharing, combined with restraint from theft and cheating, greed can be overcome. Monastic training and meditative training allows one to overcome subtler forms of attachment which are the keys of suffering.
Each day should be lived by moving on and accepting the next obstacle, while still appreciating the fortunate past and enjoying the immediate presence. Without recognition of pain and sorrow, there is no initiation for a solution. According to Buddha, one must accept suffering and live based on the laws of the Eightfold Path in order to achieve salvation. Because of the Four Noble Truths, people have been given a structural opportunity of hope that there is reason to live our lives to the fullest.
The third noble truth is the end of suffering and possibly go to Nirvana. The fourth noble truth is known as the eightfold path. It teaches people the right way to live in order to keep them away from the causes of suffering. The eightfold path are the following: right meditation, right speech, right concentration, right livelihood, right contemplation, right thought, right view, and right action. The Buddha also rejected things such as a soul or self.

Everyone in life has suffered one way or another, it is impossible not have experience some kind of suffering. The Second Noble truth is that all suffering is caused by craving. As humans, we naturally want what we can’t have, but getting what we want does not always guarantee happiness. The third noble truth is that suffering can be overcome and happiness can be achieved. This is one of the most important stages.
Buddhism is the philosophy of being awake and conscious in life. Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha, shared his wisdom with the world and believed that the path to enlightenment was a process of elimination. These eliminations can be conquered through a process called Zen. He believe it was the only way to get rid of the burdens human’s carry of, ignorance, desire and suffering. Buddhism is almost the complete opposite of our western world because our society requires us to act a certain way in order to thrive or even survive.
