There were many films that we watched in class. I think that it is interesting to look at the two films “This is Spinal Tap” and “Nanook of the North”. “Nanook of the North” being a classical film. “This is Spinal Tap is a modern day film. “This is Spinal Tap” This film is very interesting to me. It is known by many people as a mockumentary in the film business. It creates parody by presenting fictional events in a documentary style. This film was created in 1984 and was a length of 82 minutes. There is some comedy involved in this film as the band is quite hilarious at some points. This film was made in color. It is a branch of anthropology which compares and analyzes the characteristics of people and their relationship between them. “Nanook of the North” came out in 1922 and had a length of 78 minutes. This film was shot in Northern Canada. This helped portray what the film was all about. It was shot in black and white because of the time period. It was directed by Robert Flaherty. This was the first ever ethnological documentary. This was a big career boost for Robert Flaherty. Robert Flaherty was also responsible for writing this classic. It is has an original screenplay. The main actors in this film are Allakariallak, Nyla, and Allee. It was focued around a family of Eskimos. Nanook was overall the main character. The main plot of this film is to show us what a year looks like for Nanook and his family. It shows how they hunt and gather food. It also shows us how they build their igloo to survive in this harsh environment. This film was the first of 25 films to be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. This is also an unusual film because there isn’t a whole lot of talking. It mainly just portrays an average day for someone living in the Arctic Circle. “Nanook of the North” won the National Film Registry award.
