Flannery O’Connor’s‭ “‬Good Country People‭”‬,‭ ‬from my point of view it seems as though this stories purpose is to show pride before the fall.‭ ‬At the beginning Joy is perceived to believe that she has no self-value,‭ ‬but she actually takes a sort of pride in her self-unworthiness.‭ ‬By changing her name to Hulga she creates a whole new outlook on the person she believes herself to be.‭ ‬She is no longer Joy,‭ ‬the poor little girl who got her leg shot off in a hunting accident.‭ ‬She is Hulga,‭ ‬an‭ “‬ugly‭” ‬woman with a PhD‭
‬in Philosophy that doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her.‭

‭By appealing to Hulga’s sensitive side he gets her to trust him “This boy, with an instinct that came from beyond wisdom, had touched the truth about her.”(450).
Manley reached her deepest fear, the fear that no one would love her because she is not like everyone else. By gaining her trust he was now the closest anyone has ever been to her; Hulga was on top of the world. She now has education and a man that loves her for who she is.
“She decided that for the first time in her life she was face to face with real innocence."(449-450) This is why the “fall” was so hard, she truly trusted Manley and showed him apart of her that no one has ever seen. When she found out who he really was I believe it truly
