The Irony of Life
Authors often try to convey deep life messages through their work. Topics range from love to war to betrayal and deception. Despite the wide variety, they all try to relate to their audience so that they identify with the character and storyline, in spite of any fictional elements. Perhaps the most relatable and harsh topic is how human nature desensitizes humans and we are conveniently ignorant to things, so long as we are appeased. The sad part is that we don’t see the damage being done, until it is too late. In Guy De Maupassant’s “The Jewelry,” the author skillfully shows how human nature can be the most ironic thing in life. Lantin, the main character, and his wife live a pretty comfortable life, despite Lantin’s modest income. His wife somehow manages to provide commodities beyond his contribution to the household, but he does not question it because he is content with how he is living. This shows that, for most human beings, ignorance is bliss until the bliss is taken away, then it is an
Lantin embodied this human nature by choosing to overlook his wife’s questionable attainment of jewelry because she was able to keep him content. He chose to blind himself to her dodgy behavior and live in the dark. It wasn’t until her passing, that he decided to figure out how she managed to maintain a household with what he earned. He came to the realization that her supposed fake jewelry, the one he loathed, that she wore to the theater, which he also loathed, came to be of great value. And once he found a way to climb back to the top, he decided to stop searching, and sell her jewelry in order to maintain his luxurious lifestyle.
