The causes, symptoms, and treatments of amnestic disorders are correctly portrayed in the movie ‘Memento”. Amnestic disorders are a group of disorders that involve the loss of memories that were formerly well-known or the loss in the capability to generate new memories. It is bigger than forgetting where you put your keys or forgetting to pick up something from the store. This disorder can develop from structural damage to the brain which affects the blood vessels. This disorder can also develop from substance abuse such as from alcoholism, heavy drug use, or an exposure to environmental toxins. It is also known as dissociative amnesia. It is a disorder that happens after a traumatic event. The person going through this type of amnesia is blocking the painful event out of their heads. The person with this disorder goes through severe depression and has a sudden loss of whom they are or where they are, lasting for a few hours to a few days. They are able to form new memories. There are a range of symptoms for an amnestic disorder. There are also differences in the severity in the symptoms. Recalling something that just happened would be the main symptom. Some memory loss can last longer than others. This is shown throughout the movie as Leonard struggles to remember the people he just met. Some people with an amnestic disorder will disagree with everyone about their memory loss, that there is nothing wrong with their memory, but Leonard told people that he just met that he had a memory problem. There is no actual cure for an amnestic disorder. But the person can go through therapy. Some things can speed up the rate at recalling their memory. Sometimes exposing the person to an item from their past can help jog their memory. In the movie “Memento”, Leonard takes pictures of people that he meets and makes notes about them on the back.
