The Wise Old Woman and Mrs. Flowers settings are one thing to contrast. The Wise Old Woman has a setting in Feudal Japan from 1185-1600. They lived in the olden days so that means they had different religions, beliefs and technology. This would mean the setting is very different now then it was then, for example they had one ruler and they decided whether to go to war or take over the other village with riddles, which is very unusual. Also, the lord could do anything he wanted, which lead to him banning all old people out of the village. Which also created a new way of thinking that old people are wise. Flowers both have main characters with conflicts. For one, some conflicts in The Wise Old Woman are Lord Higa was going to go to take the main village over if they didn't solve his riddles, which brings the next conflict in. The main towns ruler, the young lord, created a new rule that after old people hit the age of 71, they must go out to the mountains and die, or at least try to survive. When the main farmers mother hit 71 he was dreading the time and when he went to take his mother out to the mountains he couldn't do it. So he decided to bring her back, make a hole in the kitchen floor and hide her. When the riddles continued to be unsolved by the so called “wise men” the young farmer would go to his mother and ask the riddle and she would solve it. The young lord finally figured that the young farmer couldn't have solved the riddles the young farmer told the young lord that it was his mother solving the riddles and the young lord finally allowed all of the old, wise people to stay in his village, because they could benefit them. Yet in Mrs. Flowers the main conflict was with Marguerite not talking. But, Marguerites grandmother owned a store and Mrs. Flowers is friends with Marguerites grandmother and Marguerites grandmother told Mrs. Flowers that Marguerite needed help.
