I read the “The Wisdom of Whores” by Elizabeth Pisani. In this book Elizabeth talked about her work as an epidemiologist and the qualitative research she did throughout the world, specifically Southeast Asian. Her goal was to determine where the spread of HIV was coming from and how to effectively education people on ways to avoid contracting HIV. Elizabeth was an extremely realistic women. She was open minded. She understood that there were people who practice unprotected sex, whether it be with their partner or with someone they payed. She also understood that there are people who abuse drugs. Much of Elizabeth’s research came from talking and interactive with individuals who engaged in the previously mentioned activities. This book relates in several ways to microbiology, my future career as a nurse and to the environment. It related to microbiology in that it talked about the various modes of transmission of HIV throughout the duration of the book. Throughout the book Elizabeth emphasized the importance of regulatory screenings. HIV can remain in the latency stage from anywhere to 2-12 years. Meaning you may not know you have it and could be spreading it to others and not even know your do so (Pisian, 313). In the same sense if for instance a men is buying sex and the person he is buying sex from has unprotected sex he could contract HIV. Now, what if this same man had a wife. If he doesn’t know he has HIV he could spread it to his wife (Pisian, 66). Another community issue with HIV that Elizabeth talked about is lack of money. Patients who are using drugs can always find the money to spend on drugs, but the clean needle is the least of these worries. Using recreational drugs is already extremely dangerous, but then when you use a dirty needle it become deadly. Elizabeth felt strongly about preventing HIV, but it really frustrated her when people would willing inject a dirty needle into their body. (Pisian,
